The CO₂ used by the beverage industry often comes from industrial sources like combustion, fermentation and chemical production. But these production processes (and the supply chain in general) can introduce trace contaminants that affect flavor and safety.

BASELINE® Total Hydrocarbon Analyzers (THA) from AMETEK MOCON and Gas Chromatographs (GC) help ensure your gases are free of impurities, consistent and compliant.

Accurate WVTR testing is essential for understanding the performance of non-woven materials across various applications.

ASTM Standard D6701 provides a reliable, standardized method for precise results, and MOCON offers the only instrument on the market that tests to this standard.

With equipment and technical support from MOCON, manufacturers can meet regulatory requirements, optimize product design and enhance overall product quality.

With PFAS being phased out of food packaging, it's crucial to evaluate alternative materials not just for safety, but for performance. Water V***r Transmission Rate (WVTR) and Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR) are critical in determining how effectively packaging protects product shelf life by limiting moisture and oxygen exposure.

As companies transition to PFAS-free options, it's important to understand how these barrier properties affect moisture and oxygen exposure to maintain product quality.

We often associate Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) with sealed, leak free packages — but when it comes to fresh fruit and vegetables, a few tiny holes can actually be an advantage.

Perforated packaging, designed with small, precisely placed holes, helps fresh produce stay fresher for longer because it:
• Balances humidity and gas exchange
• Prevents condensation and mold by allowing excess moisture to escape
• Avoids off odors and spoilage caused by anaerobic (low oxygen) conditions

The placement and size of these holes are precisely calculated to maximize freshness. In some cases, the packaging is also flushed with tailored levels of O₂ or CO₂ before sealing to support — and amplify — the benefits of the natural, passive atmosphere that develops inside the package.

Sometimes the simplest innovations make the biggest difference.

Permeation is invisible—but product failure isn’t.
Oxygen and moisture ingress quietly drive shelf life, reliability, and performance—from food packaging to OLED displays.
In this webinar, learn how to interpret OTR, WVTR and CO₂TR—and turn test data into smarter material and packaging decisions.

Different fruits and vegetables have completely different storage needs to stay fresh.
These factors play a major role in maximizing shelf life:
• Temperature
• Gas mixture surrounding the product (atmosphere)
• Humidity

For example, strawberries thrive at 0–5°C with 10% O₂ and up to 20% CO₂, while tomatoes prefer 8–12°C and low CO₂ levels.

We took “out of office” very literally yesterday… and moved the entire MOCON team outside!

What followed:
Burgers & sausages on the grill and a highly competitive (and slightly questionable) co****le tournament 😉

Same great team—just with more sunshine, less machinery, and a few unexpected co****le champions
Turns out, great ideas (and team spirit) thrive just as well outside the factory walls.

Fresh fruit and vegetables keep breathing long after harvest — and that tiny fact plays a major role in how long they stay fresh.

Respiration rates vary by crop type and storage temperature. Even a 10°C temperature increase can double or triple the rate, accelerating aging and spoilage.

By managing oxygen and CO₂ levels, modified atmosphere packaging helps slow this natural process and extend the shelf life of fresh produce.
