Grateful to Minnesota Women’s Press for featuring my reflections from the Somali community panel at the National Convergence for Democracy.

Our small businesses have survived so much, but they’re not surviving this without us. My call to action hasn’t changed: support small businesses, not just this year, but for the next 10 years. That includes all of Minnesota; Willmar, Saint Cloud, Minneapolis, Rochester, Mankato, and beyond.

And of course when asked what home means to me, the answer was simple: Minnesota. Home is people. 💛

Some places you read about, but south Minneapolis is one you have to walk through.

Last month I curated a Learning from Place experience with the Minnesota Humanities Center and took a group on foot through the Somali cultural corridor of South Minneapolis. We opened at the The Somali Museum, We heard the story behind Hoyo Sambusa from the woman who built it. We walked the murals created by GuulsameArt, visited a staple 11 year business Z**I Boutique, then moved through Karmel Mall, and closed over tea the way it is supposed to be done.

Thank you to the Minnesota Humanities Center for trusting me to design this and for understanding that our stories deserve to be walked into, not summarized from a distance. A special thank you to Sara Whiting for capturing our stories into photos, And thank you to Minnesota Women’s Press for joining us and writing this one up with the care this community deserves.

To every business owner, artist, and elder who opened a door to us, this belongs to you.
