Every approval requires them.

Every crisis waits for them.

At first, it feels responsible.

Eventually, it becomes dangerous.

Because organizations built around one person inherit that person's limitations.

The strongest leaders do not try to become indispensable.

They build systems that make dependence unnecessary.

The goal is not to be needed forever.

The goal is to build something that works even when you are not in the room.

That is what sustainability looks like.

Passion is valuable.

It is often where every mission begins.

But passion is a terrible scaling strategy.

As organizations grow, complexity grows with them.

More staff. More stakeholders. More reporting. More expectations.

At that stage, enthusiasm alone becomes insufficient.

Systems become necessary.

The goal is not to replace passion.

The goal is to support passion with structure.

Because impact becomes sustainable when systems carry what emotions can no longer sustain.

I have come to believe that every one of us lives four lives.

The life we inherit.

The life others assign to us.

The life we intentionally design.

And, if we are courageous enough, the life we multiply into others.

Too many people spend their lives trapped in the second one.

A difficult season becomes an identity.

A rejection becomes a verdict.

A mistake becomes a label.

But chapters were never meant to become permanent identities.

This week's edition of The Inner Work (Issue #021) explores why the greatest act of courage may simply be refusing to let your current chapter define the rest of your story.

One line from the essay that has stayed with me:
