Why Pioneers Put A Silver Dollar In Milk

People figured out this trick long before we had modern medicine. Early pioneers used to drop a real silver dollar into a fresh gallon of milk to keep it from spoiling on long trips. Decades later, Sears, Roebuck and Co. put this exact science to work by making washing machines with silver parts to zap germs in your laundry. Today, high-tech hospitals even line their operating room walls, counters, and tools with silver to stop dangerous superbugs from spreading.

Silver kills germs by acting like a tiny wrecking ball. When silver gets wet, it releases invisible, active particles called ions. These particles stick to bacteria, viruses, and fungi, punching holes straight through their outer walls. Once inside, the silver traps the germ's DNA and machinery, completely freezing its ability to breathe, eat, or multiply. Because it attacks the germ from every angle at the exact same time, the germs die off quickly and cannot mutate to fight back.

And today silver's germ-zapping power is hidden all over a modern home. Manufacturers weave microscopic silver particles, often called nanosilver, straight into the fibers of everyday fabrics. You can find it in high-tech athletic socks and sportswear to stop sweat-eating bacteria from causing foul odors. It is also woven into bed sheets, pillows, and towels so they stay fresh and smell clean for longer between washes. Even kitchen cleanup gets a silver boost, as brands make microfiber cleaning cloths and dish sponges laced with silver ions to keep the fabric from turning slimy or molding.

PREPARE TO BE MESMERIZED!
Experience the subarctic wilderness through "Butterflies & Moths of the Taiga: A Snapshot". Twin Cities-based visual artist and MICA illustration graduate Steph Kunze transforms meticulous scientific observation into breathtaking contemporary art. By hand-drawing resilient northern Lepidoptera species onto fabric and building intricate fiber collages, Kunze captures the delicate, powdery texture of insect wings, making the artwork practically leap off the gallery walls.
