It’s been just shy of 9 years since I first launched Spice out of a shared office with (RIP). A lot has changed over those years; cross country moves, a brief foray into custom anodizing, a few stints as a silent builder for larger brands, an in house line of wheels etc.
In the last year however, I’ve experienced a stronger feeling of burnout than ever before and have struggled to find new ways to adapt and push through. Running a business by yourself is an endurance sport; errands to run, books to keep, websites to update, appointments to schedule. It all chips away at a healthy work life balance and I think it’s time to be honest with myself that I don’t really want to do it any more. So…I’ll be closing up shop effective immediately.
I’m proud of every spoke weaved and wrench turned, and I’m forever grateful to those who supported me over the years. For those close friends, I’m sure I’ll spin up a wheel from time to time. As for the business, it looks better in the rear view.

Ope! Forgot to post for over a month again.Truth be told I never know what to take pictures of or write anymore and this app kind of sucks now anyways... Moreover, it's been a year for reflections. On the business side of things, I've realized what an impact 2 cross country moves in 3 years can have. Exhaustion aside, it confuses customers, changes relationships with suppliers, and can leave you wondering what you're even doing anymore. On the personal side of things, I've realized that I've been pushing myself too hard for too long. I've spent years obsessing over deadlines and sales. Life's too short to live like that, so I'm going to commit to freeing up more time for pursuing other passions.

I moved back to Minneapolis a few weeks ago. Before I could even unpack, everyone and their friends were hitting me up for builds. Those dozen or so wheels gave me a much needed boost of confidence and clarity. Going forward, I'm going to keep things simple. I'm going to keep doing what I do best. I'll be doing wheel builds, tubeless setups, repairs, etc. all from the comfort of my home. A commercial space is simply unnecessary at this point. Since I don't want every weirdo knowing where I live, I'll be keeping the location private, but offering local pickup and delivery. This will be the plan for the foreseeable future. Some parts suppliers will be ok with it. Some won't, but I'm always happy to build with customer supplied parts.

The website will be mostly down for a few days while I work on some much needed updates. There will still be a contact page so don't be afraid to reach out!

When I first started Spice, I was often asked “Why not just start a regular bike shop?”. I never knew quite how to answer that. Sure, time and space were limiting factors. On the other hand, I think I just didn’t want to open the can of worms that a full service shop can be. However, these days I’ve found myself a bit bored. And, with a stronger idea of how I want and don’t want a shop to look, I’ve decided to open up to a wider range of repairs. Wheel building will still be a large part of what I do, just not the only thing I do. The “custom” tab on the website is now “services” and local appointments can now be scheduled via email. For those outside the backroads of Foley, MN, pick up and delivery are also available!
