Great golf doesn’t start at the surface—it starts underground.

Before the first blade of turf ever sees sunlight, soil chemical, physical, and water testing set the foundation for long-term success.

🧪 Chemical testing ensures balanced pH and nutrient availability—so inputs work with the soil, not against it.
🏗️ Physical testing confirms proper sand gradation, drainage, and stability—critical for firm, fast, playable conditions.
💧 Water testing protects turf and infrastructure by identifying salts, bicarbonates, sodium, and other issues before irrigation ever turns on.

During new golf course construction, testing isn’t an extra step—it’s risk management, cost control, and performance insurance rolled into one.

At ScoutLinx Golf & Turf Consulting, we help builders and designers make confident decisions early—so the course performs exactly as intended for decades to come.

Build it right. Grow it right. Play it right.

Are all soil testing laboratories created equal?

No!!

Reliable soil data depends on more than just running a test. Differences in extraction methods, instrumentation, sample preparation, and quality control can lead to real variability in results.

Brookside Laboratories uses validated methods, strict QC programs, and modern analytical equipment to produce repeatable, defensible data—especially important for sand-based greens and MLSN programs.

Bottom line: Consistency and quality control matter! Use the same trusted lab year after year to make sound, data-driven turf decisions.

Why and How was MLSN developed??

MLSN stands for Minimum Level for Sustainable Nutrition, and it was developed for turfgrass management, especially golf courses and sports fields.

Why MLSN was developed

MLSN came out of a few big, real-world problems in turf management:

Over-fertilization was common
Traditional soil nutrient guidelines were often based on old agronomic models that aimed for maximum yield (think corn or wheat), not playable, healthy turf.

That led to:

Excess fertilizer use
Higher costs
Nutrient runoff and environmental damage
Turfgrass doesn’t behave like crops

Turf is: Perennial and Mowed constantly

Valued for performance and appearance, not yield
Classic “sufficiency level” soil tests didn’t really match how turfgrass actually uses nutrients.

Better data became available
By the 2000s, there were huge datasets from real golf courses showing turf could perform perfectly well at much lower soil nutrient levels than previously thought.

Environmental pressure
Golf courses were (and still are) under scrutiny for nutrient runoff into waterways. MLSN offered a science-backed way to fertilize responsibly without sacrificing turf quality.

How MLSN was developed

MLSN was created primarily by PACE Turf, led by Dr. Micah Woods, using a data-driven approach:

Massive soil test database
Thousands of soil samples
Collected from golf courses around the world
Only included samples where turf was performing well (good color, density, playability)

Statistical analysis, not theory
Instead of asking “What should turf need?”, MLSN asked:
“What nutrient levels are actually present where turf is already successful?”

Identifying minimum thresholds
For key nutrients (K, P, Ca, Mg, etc.), they calculated:
The lower boundary of nutrient levels where high-quality turf still existed
This became the minimum level needed to sustain performance

Continuous refinement
MLSN isn’t static:
New soil data constantly updates the thresholds
It adapts to different grass species, climates, and management styles

What makes MLSN different
Minimum, not maximum → apply only what’s needed
Performance-based → grounded in real turf success
Environmentally safer → less leaching and runoff
Cost-effective → fewer unnecessary inputs

In short

MLSN was developed because:
Old fertilizer models didn’t fit turfgrass
Data showed turf thrives at lower nutrient levels
The industry needed a sustainable, defensible standard

And it was built by:
Analyzing massive real-world soil datasets
Defining nutrient minimums tied directly to successful turf performance

Why MLSN Matters in Precision Turfgrass Management

Minimum Levels of Sustainable Nutrition (MLSN) is a science-based approach that sets defensible minimum nutrient thresholds needed to maintain healthy, high-performing turf—without excess inputs. For golf courses focused on precision turfgrass management, MLSN delivers measurable agronomic and environmental benefits.

Key Benefits of MLSN:

• Data-driven decisions: Uses extensive turf research and soil test data to guide nutrient management, not
generalized sufficiency ranges.
• Improved nutrient efficiency: Targets only what the turf truly needs, reducing over-application of phosphorus, potassium, and other nutrients.
• Environmental stewardship: Minimizes nutrient runoff and leaching, supporting sustainability initiatives and regulatory compliance.
• Consistent turf performance: Maintains playability and turf health while avoiding luxury consumption and nutrient imbalances.
• Cost control: Reduces unnecessary fertilizer inputs without sacrificing quality.

When paired with annual soil testing and precision application, MLSN allows superintendents to manage turf proactively—supporting firm, fast playing conditions while protecting soil and water resources.

Why Annual Soil and Water Testing is Important for Golf Course Performance

Behind every great playing surface lies data-driven turfgrass management. Conducting annual tests on organic matter, physical characteristics, chemical composition, and water quality provides a solid foundation for maintaining healthy, consistent, and sustainable turf conditions.

Organic Matter Testing: This tracks the accumulation of organic material that affects firmness, water infiltration, and oxygen exchange.

Physical Analysis: This evaluates the distribution of sand particles, porosity, and the overall performance of the root zone.

Chemical Testing: This identifies nutrient balance, salinity levels, and pH, helping to guide precise fertility programs.

Water Quality Testing: This ensures that irrigation sources support turf health and maintain stable soil chemistry.

When performed and interpreted by a qualified consulting agronomist, these tests convert raw data into actionable management strategies. This helps superintendents make informed decisions, reduce inputs, and optimize playability throughout the year.

Science + Experience = Enhanced Playability and Performance.

Golf course construction and renovations are currently very popular across the country. With this trend, there is a growing need for careful planning and attention to detail to ensure that projects turn out as intended.

I came across an excellent article by golf course architect Forrest Richardson that emphasizes how every project is the sum of its parts. He highlights the necessity of paying attention to detail, as it contributes significantly to enhancing the game of golf.

In addition to the design and construction team, it is crucial to involve a consulting agronomist. This professional provides chemical and physical testing, monitors quality control during the construction phase, and offers agronomic support as the golf course transitions into the grow-in and maintenance phases with a comprehensive agronomic plan.
