I had an utterly fantastic time coming to speak to the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine students about negotiation, in a workshop hosted by the Ross chapter of the Student American Veterinary Medical Association, RUSVM SAVMA.

The students were incredibly insightful, hungry for knowledge, and kind. What a privilege!

Had a great time talking negotiation to the ACVP - American College of Veterinary Pathologists last weekend at their annual conference.

The room was packed and the group was incredibly engaged! They asked thoughtful questions and even put their skills to practice in small groups after my presentation.

I love to customize my workshops to specific industries, and tackle questions like "How do you advocate for yourself in academia versus corporate environments?".

The racist, sexist wage gap robs Black women of over $900,000 across their lifetimes. Meaning that Black women have to work until they’re almost 80 years old to be paid what white men are paid by age 60. That’s unacceptable—and it’s why I’m joining National Womens Law Center to say .

Black women typically make just 67 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men. This wage gap costs Black women a staggering loss of $907,680 over a 40-year career.

In Community-Centric Fundraising's article "Underpaid Staff Don't Need Motivation, They Need Dollar Bills and Benefits", one of the most important points made is that working in the social sector has become similar to that of being an artist: it is a financial privilege to do so for many, and usually requires the financial support of family or a partner.

As the great resignation and unprecedented job openings continue, remember that negotiating for your salary and benefits doesn't just help you, it drives the sector forward to a more equitable place.

I always emphasize the importance of enthusiasm and a friendly demeanor in negotiations, but it's important not to confuse enthusiasm for gratitude.

While gratitude is an excellent social quality to have in your day-to-day life, it can actually hinder negotiations!
