The Ford Flex is getting packed, the booth supplies have taken over my house, and the SHRM26 adventure is officially real.

Todayā€™s mission: finish packing the Ford Flex, booth materials R, bannersR, giveaways ā˜‘ļø, QR codesā˜‘ļø, snacksā˜‘ļøā˜‘ļø, chargersā˜‘ļø, and all the ā€œplease donā€™t forget thisā€ items make it into the carā˜‘ļø.

Tomorrow, the real adventure begins. The team officially heads to Orlando for SHRM26!

There is something really special about preparing for a conference of this size. Itā€™s the mix of excitement, nerves, logistics, coffee, last-minute checklists, and the joy of knowing we get to connect with so many HR friends, colleagues, and new faces in one place.

Weā€™ll be at Booth 4326 sharing The Complete Manager Makeover Training Curriculum and National Management Training Week, but more than anything, Iā€™m looking forward to the conversations, the connections, and the energy of the HR community.

Iā€™m also excited to kick off the week with the Universal Partner Appreciation event on Monday with and TicketsatWork, a team Iā€™ve had the privilege of supporting since 2001!! Relationships like that are truly what this work is all about.

My mother loved butterflies. Her name was Maria Del Carmen Rodriguez Brown, and Iā€™ve often wondered if she loved them for the same reasons I do now. šŸ¦‹

The butterfly appears on every piece of HBLā€™s marketing. Itā€™s our symbol, and it carries four lessons that I try to live by every day.

Transparency. Butterfly wings are actually clear. Their color comes from light and the arrangement of their scales. When we allow others to truly see who we are, thatā€™s where trust begins.

Strength. They look delicate, but butterfly wings can sustain the creature through rain and wind.

Determination. Butterflies fly thousands of miles to reach their destination.

Transformation. From caterpillar to flying creature, they are the ultimate example of change through effort and work.

My mother gave me the image. My father gave me the ambition. Together, they shaped everything that came next.

Iā€™ve left jobs over principle. More than once.

Once, it was because new management at a hotel refused to give an employee her paycheck because of an expired driverā€™s license. The license was still a valid employment document. Perfectly legal. But they still wouldnā€™t release her check šŸ’¼

I challenged it. I explained the law āš–ļø I fought for what was right. The employee eventually got paid. But I knew then that this was not a place I could stay.

Another time, a CEO expected me to sit in an office waiting for clients who were hours late while my daughterā€™s eighth-grade dance was happening that evening. The message was clear: my time, my family, and my commitments outside of work didnā€™t matter.

Both of those experiences taught me the same lesson. If I was going to spend my career fighting for how people are treated, I couldnā€™t do it from inside organizations that didnā€™t share those values.

Thatā€™s why I relaunched HBL Resources šŸ’™ And thatā€™s why I became a consultant, so I could work with companies that actually want to do things right.

I was eight years old. The phone on my fatherā€™s massive desk barely reached my eye level, but when it rang, I climbed up on that cushioned chair and answered it.

ā€œBrownā€™s Glass Shop, can I help you?ā€

That was my dadā€™s business. My grandfather, Leroy Brown, started it, and my father, Laval Joseph Brown Sr., ran it after him. And for that one phone call, it felt like it was mine too.

I remember the smell of dry curing wood, the glass display windows catching the afternoon light, and the wooden frames, mahogany, oak, cherry lined up along the walls.

That was the day I knew I was going to be a business owner. Just like Dad.

Today, HBL Resources is a family business too. My daughters, my husband, and my sister have all been part of building this šŸ’›. Four generations of entrepreneurs in my family. I never could have imagined that when I was eight.

Something personal just went live, and I wanted to share it with all of you.

A writer named Sadia spent time learning about my story, from growing up in my fatherā€™s glass shop in Brooklyn to building HBL Resources, to the experiences that shaped everything I believe about how people should be treated at work.

The article covers some moments that are very close to my heart: my dad letting me answer the phone at Brownā€™s Glass Shop when I was eight years old, the post-9/11 layoffs where an employee named Jose said ā€œthank youā€ after I told him heā€™d lost his job, and the day I decided to walk away from corporate life and build something on my own terms.

Iā€™m proud of this piece, and Iā€™m grateful to Sadia for writing it with so much care āœļøšŸ’™
