The fact that translation has been valued and practiced
for millennia shows of its importance in our
communication.

One of the most significant moments in translation
history (at least for the French) was when Charles V
The Wise (1338-1380) commissioned a translation of
Aristotle's 'Politics', 'Ethics', and 'Economics', which
were of considerable value to the young king.

If only modern rulers had the same hunger for wisdom
and knowledge that some dude over 700 years ago.

Meta continues its foray into cutting-edge machine translation technology with the introduction of a speech-to-speech AI that translates into Hokkien, a language without a textual component which is spoken by almost 50 million people in South East Asia.

Using a variety of new AI training methods, they have managed a system which can translated one sentence at a time in real time, so the tech is still in its infancy.

These developments are coming faster and faster; the future of machine translation seems to be extending to all facets of interlingual conversation.

[EN]
Meteorologist Joseph Trujillo, a 25-year-old Peruvian-American, has recently developed a formula to translate emergency weather signals in Spanish in a new, more effective way.

Him and his fellow researchers figured out neutral terms that Spanish speakers, regardless of their different dialects or countries of origin, could understand.

He gives the example of a Guatemalan family of seven who all drowned during a tornado warning in Oklahoma, when they fled to their basement after hearing the sirens, not realizing that the sirens also warned against floods.

This new approach to weather warnings with a broader vocabulary will probably end up saving lives, thanks to proper translation.

Quebec's controversial new bill introduces a clause that might make the lives of English speakers in the region significantly more complicated.

The bill posits that all notarized documents (which include wills, real estate documents, powers of attorney and marriage contracts) have to be translated into French before being registered, and the fee of these translations have to come out of the clients pocket.

With translation fees in the hundreds of dollars per page (not counting notary or registration fees), and with many Quebecers being less than fluent in French, many concerns have been raised about the stress this would put on the general population.

Marco Polo was one of the most influential
explorers and travelers of his time, and his exploits in
the eastern hemisphere affected commerce, culture,
and the arts during the 13th and 14th centuries.

What is less known about him is how exactly his
famous account, 'The Travels of Marco Polo' came into
being.

Upon returning to his hometown of Venice after living in
China for 17 years, he was arrested by members of the
Republic of Genoa, as the two countries were at war at
the time.

In prison, he related his memoirs orally to fellow inmate
Rustichello da Pisa, who translated those stories from
Venetian to Franco-Venetian, a specific dialect spoken
north of Italy's Po river.

The accounts in the book themselves are a subject of
criticism, as translation errors were commonplace
before the invention of the printing press, which has
exacerbated the stories and entirely fabricated other
ones.

If there is one sure thing, though, is that Marco Polo
really did travel across the breadth of the known world
at the time, and his experiences marked a turning point
in the propagation of cultures and ideas through
language.

[EN]
In rather surprising news, Google has entirely pulled their translation service from mainland China this week, citing low usage.

This comes as the culmination of Google's removal from Chinese internet, as their search engine, Maps function and Gmail are all blocked due to stringent censorship laws from the Chinese government.

Funnily enough, when attempting to access Google Translate in China now, it redirects to Hong Kong's version of the service, which, again, is blocked in China.

As China separates itself more from the global internet, the opportunity for its citizens to interact with foreign languages becomes less and less available.

Today is International Translation Day!

On May 24th, 2017, the United Nations adopted a
resolution to mark September 30th as International
Translation Day.

Why the 30th of September? Today is also the feast of
St. Jerome, the patron saint of translators (who we've
talked about before), and is a day to celebrate and
honor the work of translators and interpreters all over
the globe.

Congratulations to our fellow translators and industry
professionals! The world would not be the same without
you.

(de quien hemos hablado antes), y es un día para
celebrar y honrar el trabajo de los traductores e
intérpretes en todo el mundo.

¡Felicitaciones a nuestros compañeros traductores e

[EN]
According to a comprehensive research report by Market Research Future (MRFR), the "Translation Service Market" (which encompasses written and interpretation services, technical and machine translation, and hardware/software), is set to create a valuation of $47.21 billion by 2030, smashing the previous estimate of $7.5 billion by the same year.

Once again we consider this theory by taking into consideration the speed at which companies and platforms are developing some form of translation infrastructure, and to what lengths these companies will go to expand their repertoire of languages.

2030 is not far away at all, and it's becoming more and more clear that translation availability will change the way business is made and communications take place across the globe.

On Wednesday, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol allegedly made insults in Korean directed toward American lawmakers, which his office disputes the translation of.

This is in relation to a meeting he had with Joe Biden in New York to discuss issues including US electric-vehicle subsidies that South Korea wants to change.

“What an embarrassment for Biden, if these idiots [referring to American lawmakers] refuse to grant it in Congress,” he said.

Immediately after these comments, a briefing took place where senior officials tried to clarify that he was directing the vitriol toward Korean lawmakers, not American ones.

Since then the public and even top Korean officials have called for an apology from President Yoon, as this is not the first time he spouses direct attacks toward American lawmakers, as he has done with US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in the past.

Big Tech often promotes the values and benefits of machine translations, but is it possible for such a service to lead one to misfortune?

Such extreme examples can seem rare, but they happen more often than one thinks.

Here is a short list of real stories of people finding out first hand how potentially unreliable and dangerous it could be to use machine translations.

In South Korea, a young man used a Chinese-to-Korean translation app to tell his female co-worker’s Korean husband they should all hang out together again soon. A mistranslation resulted in him erroneously referring to the woman as a nightlife establishment worker, resulting in a violent fistfight between the two in which the husband was killed.

In Israel, a young man captioned a photo of himself leaning on a bulldozer with the Arabic caption “يصبحهم,” or “good morning,” but the social media’s AI translation rendered it as “hurt them” in English or “attack them” in Hebrew. This led the man, a construction worker, to being arrested and questioned by police.

Something similar happened in Denmark, where police erroneously confronted a Kurdish man for financing terrorism because of a mistranslated text message.

Unfortunately, as machine translation becomes more commonplace and widely used, expect to hear more incidents like this in the future.

[EN]
In 1994, Haitian military officer and de facto ruler Raoul
Cédras was urged by the American government (who
had instilled him with such power) to step down from
his position, or so they would do it forcibly.

In a public speech, a young and inexperienced
interpreter fumbled a particularly important line: Cédras
said, "Je pretends me retirer", which translates to "I
claim to step down", but was instead changed to "I
pretend to step down".

This would've caused major conflicts of interest if the
United States government took this statement at face
value, but fortunately, someone managed to catch this
error and nobody had to be forcibly removed.

Panama in 1994)
