Solar Plexus LLC Installing Renewable Energy Systems That Work

04/17/2024

Solar Plexus is proud to have reached 30 years in business – local and family-owned since the beginning. It’s been a long haul - anyone who’s spent time here knows that Montana has always been slow to catch up with the trends in the rest of the country, but net-metered solar is finally gaining ground here. Unfortunately, that also means that several large out-of-state companies have discovered us and their salespeople (who work on commission) are eager to capitalize on the green wave. Please beware of high-pressured sales tactics and false information about tax credits, net-metering policies and financing. If anyone tells you the 30% Federal ITC is a check from the government, they are wrong. If they tell you that net-metering is soon going away, they are wrong. If they tell you that you will be guaranteed to be grandfathered in at the same rates if net-metering terms change, they are wrong. If they tell you that solar generation can offset your ENTIRE bill, they are wrong. If they tell you that the banks won’t lend to anyone who doesn’t make $45,000 per year, they are wrong. These are only some examples of misleading statements – do your due diligence and get several quotes, ask good questions and don’t be pressured into making an immediate decision. There are enough companies (local and otherwise) that you have options. We always recommend clients look at the Clearwater Credit Union’s solar loan site – even if you don’t need financing it’s an excellent resource for learning how to evaluate a bid and the questions you should be asking your salesperson or installer.

Stay tuned for more informative posts about how the credits work, the future of net-metering and the resources for financing renewable projects.

🚨ACTION ALERT!🚨 - Defend rooftop solar, contact your lawmakers today on HB 643.

Comment by Monday, Feb 27 -- https://leg.mt.gov/web-messaging/

❌ - HB 643 would discourage families, business, schools, libraries, and nonprofit organizations from investing in renewable energy, Montana jobs, and energy savings.

❌ - HB 643 would undermine rooftop solar in Montana by reducing the rate that rooftop solar customers would be credited for the electricity they generate to offset their energy bills.

❌ - HB 643 limits everyday Montanans from choosing energy independence.

Please send a note to the House Energy, Technology, and Federal Relations Committee and to your House Representative urging them to oppose this bill that tips the scales against distributed energy.

This week we installed 30kW on a roof near Clearwater Junction. It's definitely springtime in Montana - we got rain, hail and blazing sun all together for three days in a row, but it's still good to be outdoors!

This is the view to the east looking out of our newly-installed office windows! The new building is coming along great - insulation next week and drywall starting the week after, we hope. We all can hardly wait until we get to enjoy the new space (and be done with noise and construction).

Here's one of our latest installations here in Missoula -22 290-watt all-black panels for a total of 6.38 kW. A number of clients are gravitating towards the clean look of the black panels versus the more typical blue/white colors. It's a sacrifice of about 10 watts per panel - the same panel in blue/white is rated at 300 watts - but some homeowners find it acceptable, especially those who have HOA design standards to adhere to.

This is a 6 kW system in the Lewis and Clark area (20 300-watt panels). The low-slope membrane roof was facing west, so we used short posts to get off the roof surface and tilt-up feet to gain a little exposure to the south. It's such a clean-looking installation, but you can't even see it from the front OR back yard!

A new grid-tied system in the Farviews area. An array of 12 panels on the garage and another 11 panels on the house. We maxed out the array sizes to make up for some shading losses - both of the roof areas are holding as many panels as we could fit.

Our latest ground-mounted array - it coordinates so nicely with the building, you can hardly see it. Designed as a shade structure for the patio underneath, it consists of 21 all-black 290-watt panels.
