This afternoon commences the annual Hood to Coast and Portland to Coast Relay Races in our area. Many of you are familiar with this race and what to expect but we wanted to remind you to use extreme caution the next 24 hours as there will be runners and walkers on our remote highways and lots of traffic. Nearly 20,000 people participate in these events and there is a major exchange in Mist where all participants may be coming through.

🚒🚑 We are staffed up and ready to respond to race-related emergencies and our local community. Thank you to our staff and volunteers - most of whom are working a 24 hour shift beginning this afternoon - for helping keep our community safe!

If you have any concerns related to the race that are not active emergencies requiring first response assistance, please contact the race organizers directly at the Toll Free Race Phone for Community Questions/Concerns: (833) 482-7821 or (833) HTC-PTC1.

🚨 Big Announcement!

The National Special Districts Association and Mist-Birkenfeld RFPD are proud to celebrate the first-ever National Special District Day on May 6, 2026 with Districts across Oregon.

Across America, special districts deliver essential services communities rely on every day — from fire protection and healthcare to clean water, parks, and infrastructure. This new national day of recognition will highlight the critical role these local governments play in keeping communities strong.

We encourage districts, state associations, and partners to adopt the National Special District Day resolution and join us in celebrating the impact of special districts nationwide.

Together we are Championing Local Services, Advancing National Impact.

Yesterday, May 3rd, 2026, Mist-Birkenfeld Rural Fire Protection District Division Chief Nicholas "Nick" Berg was honored in Emmitsburg, Maryland at the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Memorial and his name was added to the Memorial Site.

Family and friends were able to attend the service where 204 Firefighters were honored this year and added to the memorial.

Both the President of the United States and Governor Kotek of Oregon requested flags be flown at half-mast yesterday in honor of the fallen firefighters being honored, which if you drove past our Main Station you may have noticed. Governor Kotek's press release may be found here, which specifically mentions Chief Berg by name: https://web.govpress.oregon.gov/mail/util.cfm?gpiv=2100169578.4185.12&gen=1

If you did not get a chance to watch the Memorial Service, here is a link to YouTube where you can stream the entire service on demand for free: https://www.youtube.com/live/Bing-q8PrDw?si=EiTnTsjLjk9ITvpR

If you would like to jump to just before when Chief Berg is honored, please click this link: https://www.youtube.com/live/Bing-q8PrDw?si=idHrM5qW3mgZfr1O&t=6307

Members of the Berg Family were es**rted by Mist-Birkenfeld Fire Chief Joe Kaczenski and a volunteer es**rt from Virginia, Heriberto Rodriguez, during the service.

We are incredibly grateful to the for their dedication to honoring the fallen and the support they provide the families. The Foundation covers travel and lodging for immediate next of kin and they are greeted at the airport upon arrival by local firefighters and es**rted to their hotels. If you want to learn more about the NFFF and how you can support them, we invite you to check out their website: https://www.firehero.org

If you ever get a chance to visit the memorial site in Emmitsburg, Maryland you will find Chief Berg's name on the 2026 memorial plaque, with the year of his passing (2024) next to his name as he was added/honored in 2026.

Lastly, please enjoy these photos shared with permission from Nick and Ann's daughter, Victoria, and Fire Chief Kaczenski.

We are incredibly honored to share that Mist-Birkenfeld Rural Fire Protection District Division Chief Nicholas "Nick" Berg will be added to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Memorial next month in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Please see the press release below with more information, including how to view livestreams of the upcoming public ceremonies.

Division Chief Berg passed away in June of 2024 in a line of duty death.
