National steer prices were lower across nearly every major weight class on Thursday compared to the previous Thursday. The largest decline occurred in the 500–599 lb category, which fell $25.92/cwt, followed by 700–799 lb steers, down $18.62/cwt, and 800–899 lb steers, which declined $17.83/cwt. Prices for 600–699 lb steers were down $10.52/cwt, while 900–999 lb steers slipped $1.48/cwt. The lone exception was the 1,000–1,099 lb category, which increased $2.71/cwt from a week ago. Despite this week's lower prices, last Thursday's cash feeder cattle sales featured record and near-record steer prices across several weight classes, creating a difficult week-over-week comparison.

According to USDA, Mitchell Livestock Marketing (Mitchell, SD) marketed 5,200 head on Thursday, up sharply from 849 head on its previous reported sale but below the 6,497 head sold during the same week last year. USDA reported good to very good demand for a large offering of backgrounded yearlings and weaned fall calves, with buyers competing aggressively throughout the sale. Yearling flesh conditions ranged from light to heavy, while heifers generally carried heavier flesh. Trade remained active all day, with particularly strong demand for fall calves.
