Building Science and B**r (BS & B**r) is. Networking group Working its way across the nation. I’ve been to two meetings, one in Dallas and one in New Orleans. They were both absolutely phenomenal opportunities to get to meet like-minded people that care about quality work and have an interest in building or fixing homes and buildings that have failed. They were about what we can do together to make life a little better for those around us and those that we care about.

Come hang out with me Wednesday, November 11, at Fairhope Brewing in Mobile, Alabama, downtown. The official start is 5:30, but I’ll probably get there early. We can chit-chat as long as you want.

If you’re interested, take this video and send it back to me so I can just kind of gauge how many people might show up. I don’t want to deal with signups or anything like that. Just try to make it easy on everybody.

Hope to see you there. It’ll be fun.

If you're trying to run a home service business or any business, for that matter, it's day one important to get a good CRM. I can't tell you how many times our CRM has saved us and how much easier it makes things.

We tried a few, and the best advice I can give you when you're trying out CRM software is that there is no perfect one. Every software is going to have its pros and cons. After using a few different ones, we ended up at Jobber, and I'm genuinely glad we made the switch. I think it's going to be with us for the foreseeable future.

I'm not going to candy-coat it: Jobber's not been perfect. We've certainly had issues, but Jobber also, hands down, has the best support compared to any other CRM software we use. If you're just starting out or you're just trying to make your business a little more organized and automated, I can't recommend Jobber enough.

There's a link for a free trial in my bio. I'm genuinely interested in what you think. Good luck out there.

Day 39 - I think it should probably be day 40 or 41. The last one I did was 37, but there were definitely two that I posted that I really should have labeled as one of the vision updates. Whatever, I got to get back to doing these because it is kind of like a little nightly therapy session for me. I'm pretty consistently hearing from people like you that you're getting a lot out of what I'm putting out there, and I am just beyond grateful for the opportunity to serve in any way. Whether it's by sharing the technical knowledge, practical knowledge that I've gained, or just the perspective and insight from a struggling small business owner.

I've realized recently that, man, nobody gets paid enough. Nobody, other than the very top. That's what really makes the home service industry so difficult, I believe: it's tough for a vast majority of the population to afford repairs. It's tough for the home service providers to afford good help. It's tough for the help to feel like it's worth putting out the extra effort for what you're getting paid and the growth potentials that you may or may not have.

I don't know. I'm super excited to continue to share this journey with you. I think some really big things are coming. I think there's a good possibility I could help start a movement to make homes more comfortable and healthier, and help you save money doing it yourself. If you don't want to, I'm here to help.

There's this disturbing pattern I'm starting to discover: it's this serious lack of proper ventilation in attics here in Mobile and around the Gulf Coast.

This is a nice house, well built. In Spring Hill, it really did look like they had the proper intake ventilation. I was pretty befuddled as to why they were having really excessive humidity in the attic after a full home diagnostic, which includes checking the attic ventilation. I discovered that they basically have no intake ventilation on this house, and they have two powered attic fans. Those fans are pulling air through the ridge vents up high and out of the conditioned living space instead of from the soffits like this.

Plus, this is really a scary trend. You can see on the inside of that soffit where the builder took the shower vent and just set the vent duct down in the soffit and kind of pointed it at the soffit vent. It clearly wasn't going anywhere. Even if the hole was wide open, that's still an intake point. That's where air is moving into the attic. All it did was just dump all the humidity every time they shower into the attic. With basically no path out, with those power vents pulling air from the ridge, all that moisture getting dumped into the soffit was never even given the opportunity to rise up, stand on its own two feet, and make something of itself.

If you've got moisture comfort issues at your house and you feel like you've tried everything, let me know how I can help. There's a link in the bio.

There are a lot of reasons why you don't want a powered attic vent or a powered roof vent on your house: nine times out of nine, they're going to pull air from the wrong places.

If you've got a problem and you're trying to solve it with powered attic ventilation, you need to solve the problem first. We see powered attic ventilation getting added before checking things like air sealing between the living space and the attic, or if all the bath vents in the house are venting to the outside.

Plus, those powered attic vents have a motor, and guess what motors do? They break, and guess where they break a lot? In unconditioned space, in a hot and humid climate.

There are some circumstances where powered ventilation can be useful when there's not enough surface area for passive ventilation to work, but there's almost always another way that doesn't have a motor you have to worry about. And yes I am well aware this is not a good test of the ridge vent but the smoke looked cool. Kbyeluvu

I don’t know. Maybe the tape had a good run. But I know that tape. It sucks. This is a supply plenum box where all the air takes a journey to the vents in each room. You w probably got one like it, just not as cool. This one had some kinda viewing hole on top of it, probably looking for loose change. This supply line has also clearly been wet so I’m sure that shortened the life of the tape. Should’ve have mastic on top of it to double down on air sealing. Losing good conditioned air like that also means you have to gain it back somewhere. Usually under your doors, or through outlets, or the fireplace. Just get rid of the chimney already. They leak, you never make a fire, get an electric insert. #

I came to the game to watch my niece cheerleading for St Paul’s because she said it was the last game of the season. She asked why I hadn't been to any games yet, and I pointed out to her that I hadn't been invited, nor did I know there were any eighth-grade boys' football games going on. It started out kind of rough. The sun was in our eyes up until about halftime. I had to hold up an empty trash can to try and provide some shade to me, my sister, and her friend.

St. Paul's took the lead early. It looked like they were going to have it pretty wrapped up. It was hard not to be impressed with the leg strength of the St. Paul's kicker early in the game when he kicked two perfect extra points. I can remember at Faubion Middle School in McKinney, Texas, we never kicked because nobody could get it through the uprights. We had to go for two every time, but this kid had had something special.
St. Paul's gave away the lead in the second half when UMS scored two unanswered touchdowns to tie it up 20-20, but St. Paul's put it all on the line, going for the field goal to go ahead with only 6 seconds remaining.

I used RetroTec grille tape over areas on these doors that have been prone to leaking even during normal rain. This is not at all what this tape is designed to do. It's normally used indoors for very short-term covering of HVAC grills and bathroom vents while we do duct leakage testing, but I had a pretty full roll of it. We had a hurricane barreling down on us, so why not give it a shot?

Based on this one test, I would say that it worked and did the job that we needed it to do. However, after only 46 hours and very little exposure to the sun, some places were already difficult to remove, and it did take a little bit of paint off.

I would absolutely use it again if we knew we weren't going to be evacuating and could get back to it before the sun had time to beat down on it and make it really difficult to remove. If we were about to take a direct shot from a hurricane and we knew we were going to be gone for a few days, I think I'd still do it. The last thing you're concerned about is the difficulty of ceiling tape being removed when there's a chance you could have severe damage.

I did find some other grille tape manufactured by The Tape Guys that have different levels of tackiness, so I'd still like to try those in some different circumstances and see how it does. If anybody knows of a large-format tape like this that's rated for exterior use and is UV resistant, let me know, because I really want to try it. Or if you know a chemical engineer that can help us develop a tape that could be used for this application, I think there's a huge market for it.

This is a safety feature, so be careful when you’re adjusting this, especially if you have kids in the house. If you are smart enough to not have kids, then cut loose.

Let’s make this shower get hotter when you’re taking a shower and you feel like, “Boy, this should be a little bit hotter,” but the water coming out of your kitchen sink will melt your skin off. Then you can probably make an adjustment under your handle to really get everything you’re paying for. Kind of like taking the restrictor plate off of a ‘72 Camaro, except it makes it hotter and it’s water.

This is a real easy DIY plumbing job, but you can use AI like Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini to look at a picture of the handle and tell you if it can be adjusted and how to take it apart. Likely the only thing you’ll need is a set of Allen wrenches or hex keys. Good luck and happy hoarding.

I know you've been in a shower where the water starts coming up over your ankles and you can feel the p*e seeping in through the lines that your socks left. You've probably tried drain cleaner and realized it's not helping. Well, it's your lucky day because I'm here to tell you it's hair that's stuck in the drain. It's always hair, and it's really easy to fix with some basic tools. I've been a handyman for 5 years, and the number one thing I can tell you is that most simple repairs around the house you can easily do yourself. Skip the drain cleaner. Follow these instructions, and you too can clean your own drain and save millions on plumbing repairs.
