With Hurricane Isaias approaching the Gulf Coast, now is the time for Mobile County residents and businesses to finish preparing. Make it a priority to have your storm preparations completed by Friday morning, October 9.
We’ve weathered hurricanes before, but every storm brings its own challenges. Sometimes, it's the little things we overlook that make the biggest difference when the power goes out or water enters our homes.
Here are a few important reminders beyond stocking up on water and batteries:
✅ Take photos of your property. Document the inside and outside of your home or business, including valuable belongings, equipment, and vehicles. These photos can be helpful if you need to file an insurance claim.
✅ Check your gutters and drainage. Clear leaves and debris from gutters, downspouts, and drainage areas to help rainwater flow away from your property.
✅ Secure outdoor items. Patio furniture, trash cans, grills, signs, and other loose objects can become dangerous in high winds.
✅ Protect important documents. Keep insurance policies, identification, and other important paperwork in waterproof containers. Save digital copies when possible.
✅ Prepare for power outages. Charge your phones and backup batteries, do your laundry, stock up on nonperishable food, and make sure you have enough necessary medications.
✅ Check your generator. Make sure it is working properly and NEVER operate it indoors or near windows and doors. Keep portable generators at least 20 feet from your home.
✅ Know your flood risks. If your home or business is in an area prone to flooding or storm surge, review your evacuation plan and follow local officials' instructions.
✅ Check on your neighbors. Elderly residents, those living alone, and families with special needs may need extra assistance preparing.
One of the most important things to remember is to prepare for the possibility of being without electricity, water, or immediate emergency assistance for several days.
