25 years ago, a friend introduced me to winemaking. During that time, it was a family activity accompanied by friends, family, food and camaraderie. I became hooked! This was the beginning of a journey from a hobby, that became a family and friend event for me as well. This hobby then became a dream for me to one day have a vineyard and a winery to share my wine and my passion with others. This passion drove me to take a giant leap of faith and quit a very good job of 19 years with UPS, leave my family and friends, and move to a foreign land, well not really foreign but it is the southeast so foreign to me. Once living in North Carolina it took me about 7 months to find another job in the IT field I was familiar with, however it was an hour drive on a good day.
Now established in a secure good paying corporate job with Wells Fargo and living in the Yadkin Valley of North Carolina, I found my place to turn my dream into a reality. I purchased 20 acres of land less than a mile from my house, crazy how things ultimately work out. The reality was coming into focus. The process of turning piece of raw land with nothing but hay into a winery and vineyard. I planned and planned and planned some more, and then pulled the trigger and set it motion what would become my vineyard and winery. It was about the end of April 2012, and it happened, my dream had indeed become a reality! It wasn’t until about 1 1/2 years later that we finally opened the doors to customers in October 2013. I was now able to finally share my wine and my passion. All of this while still working full time for Wells Fargo. In June 2022 for numerous reasons, I finally left corporate America. This year, 2025, we celebrated 12 years of having our tasting room open.
Many of you reading this have been customers of ours since the beginning and might also be reading and wondering what’s this is all about, what’s next? Some may have even skipped down with a sense of what might be coming. Well here it is, I have begun a new chapter/career in HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning). That said I have decided to cut back on the winery hours as of January 1st, 2026. At this time my plan will be to open for pre-ordered pickups and tastings on only one weekend a month, the second full weekend. Our website will be updated after the 1st of the year to reflect the actual dates. We do still have inventory and will continue to maintain our permits. We will still make some small batches that we will offer for sale. We may occasionally have events such as tastings or dinners with our wine and possibly other local wineries. If you are a wine club member in good standing at the end of this year you will continue to receive your discount.
I don’t know for certain where things go from here. I hope to stay involved in the winemaking industry and feel I still have a lot of experience and knowledge to share. I also hope to see as many of you as possible on the weekends we will be open. If there is a time that you would like to just come pickup some wine please reach out and we will try our best to accommodate!
Sincerely,
Christopher Bolcato - Damn Yankee Winemaker
