Field Observation:

At a lot of plants, lubrication isn't anybody's actual job.

It gets assigned to whoever's free that shift. No owner, no standard, no accountability — just a task that floats between people who were never taught why any of it matters. And then everyone's surprised when the results float too.

The plants that get reliability right make lubrication somebody's responsibility on purpose. Not a chore passed around — a discipline someone owns, understands, and is measured on. That single decision — giving it an owner — changes more than any product ever will.

Quick Fact: Fewer than 1 in 10 bearings ever reaches its rated life.

Bearings are engineered for a calculated fatigue life — millions of revolutions. In the real world, the overwhelming majority never get close. They die early, and the number-one reason isn't the bearing. It's lubrication: wrong lubricant, wrong amount, wrong interval, or contamination that got in.

That's the good news, actually. If most bearing failures are lubrication-caused, then most are preventable — you're not fighting metal fatigue, you're fixing a practice.

Field Observation:

I've walked into plants that pay for oil analysis every month and file the reports without reading them.

The samples get pulled, the lab does its work, the report comes back — and it goes in a drawer. Meanwhile that report is quietly naming the exact thing about to fail: water ingress, wrong lubricant, a bearing starting to wear. The data was there. Nobody acted on it.

Oil analysis isn't the program. Acting on oil analysis is the program. A report you don't read is just a receipt for a sample you wasted. The plants that get value from it treat every result as a decision to make, not a box to check.

Quick Fact: A $20 breather can save you a $20,000 bearing.

Every time a gearbox or reservoir heats up and cools down, it breathes — pulling outside air in as it cools. That air carries moisture and dirt straight into your oil through the one opening you left unprotected. A standard breather cap lets it all in. A desiccant breather traps the water and particles before they ever reach the oil.

It's one of the cheapest reliability upgrades in the plant, and one of the most overlooked. Contamination you keep out is contamination you never have to filter, analyze, or pay for in a failure.

Field Observation:

I once counted eight grease guns in a l**e room and not one of them had a label.

Nobody could tell me which gun held which grease. So every re-grease was a coin flip — right grease, wrong grease, or a mix of two that shouldn't meet. The routes ran on time. The records were spotless. And every one of those bearings was getting whatever happened to be in the gun somebody grabbed.

A label costs about a dollar. The bearing it protects costs a lot more. The plants that take lubrication seriously make the right grease the easy grease to grab — because discipline you have to remember is discipline you'll eventually forget.

Quick Fact: Two greases that each work perfectly can wreck a bearing when you mix them.

Different thickeners don't always get along. Put a lithium grease and a polyurea grease in the same bearing and the mix can break down, soften, and lose its ability to hold oil — leaving the bearing running on next to nothing. Both greases were fine. The combination wasn't.

That's why "just top it off with whatever's on the cart" is a gamble, and why knowing what's already in the bearing matters as much as what you're adding.

Most plants tell me they have a lubrication program. Most of them have a lubrication habit.

They look the same from across the floor — until something fails. The difference: in a program, every choice has a reason — this grease, this amount, this interval, because of the machine. In a habit, it's "that's what we've always done," and nobody remembers why.

Here's the one that matters: when your veteran tech retires, does the program stay, or does it leave with him? A habit lives in people. A program lives in the system.

Field Observation:

The dirtiest oil in a lot of plants is the new oil.

I've pulled samples straight from a fresh drum that came back dirtier than the used oil in the sump twenty feet away. New doesn't mean clean. Oil picks up particles and water in manufacturing, transport, and storage long before it reaches your equipment — so if you're topping off straight from an open drum, you're not adding clean oil, you're adding contamination with a fresh label.

The plants that figure this out filter new oil before it goes in, keep drums sealed and indoors, and stop treating "new" as a synonym for "ready." The ones that don't spend years wondering why bearings keep failing on oil that "should be fine."

Quick Fact: Heat is the quietest way to kill a lubricant.

For every 18°F (10°C) a lubricant runs above its ideal temperature, its useful life is cut roughly in half. That's not an exaggeration — a bearing running about 36°F hot isn't losing a little oil life, it's losing roughly three-quarters of it.

The oil didn't "wear out." It cooked. And most of the time, nobody was watching the temperature.
