On October 19, USDA announced the Harvest Fuel Relief program, providing $8 billion in one-time assistance to help agricultural producers offset increased input costs and temporary market disruptions during the 2026 crop year.

While payment details for almonds and other specialty crops are still being developed, USDA is seeking information on increased fuel costs to help determine payment rates.

The Almond Alliance is working directly with the USDA to clarify the required data and will soon reach out to members with a data request. Participation will be critical to ensuring that the costs facing California's almond industry are accurately represented.

Members are encouraged to watch for additional information from the Almond Alliance and prepare to participate in the upcoming data request.

A few weeks ago, DH Long Farming in Zamora, California, hosted a pollinator habitat site visit. Grower Rachael Long, a participant in the Almond Alliance's Pollinator Alliance program since 2023, has established 3,550 feet of NRCS 422 Hedgerow and plans to expand her conservation efforts this fall with an additional 1,200 feet of hedgerow and 1.5 acres of NRCS Monarch Habitat.

CDFA Biodiversity Coordinator Patricia Bohls, CDFA Grand Analyst Rukmi Satpanthi, and Pollinator Alliance Grant Coordinator Nicole Gault attended the visit, which was part of CDFA's outreach to participants in its Block Grant Recipient programs to see conservation practices in the field and connect directly with grant recipients.

Before retiring after 37 years as a UC Cooperative Extension Farm Advisor, Rachel conducted extensive research on crop production, pollination, pest management, and hedgerows. Her work helped demonstrate the value of hedgerows for pollinators, wildlife habitat, pest control, and carbon sequestration.

Thank you, Farmers for Free Trade for bringing us together; the Fresno County Farm Bureau for hosting; and Congressman Jim Costa for joining this important discussion.

As the USMCA review moves forward, these conversations are critical to reinforcing the importance of reliable access to North American markets for California agriculture and our rural communities.

Central Valley farmers, agricultural leaders and elected officials gathered Tuesday to discuss growing concerns over international trade.

USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) has extended the Supplemental Disaster Relief Program (SDRP) application deadline and expanded flexibility for documenting quality losses.

The Almond Alliance raised concerns directly with USDA about challenges almond growers were facing under SDRP and worked with FSA leadership in California and Washington to address them.

Effective now:

• The deadline for SDRP Stage 1 and Stage 2 applications has been extended to September 30, 2026.

• FSA will allow additional types of verifiable and reliable documentation to demonstrate quality-related discounts resulting from qualifying natural disasters in 2023 and 2024.

For more information on SDRP, visit http://fsa.usda.gov/sdrp or contact your local FSA county office.

The Central Valley is heating up, and many areas are under Heat Advisories. Heat illness can happen quickly, but it’s also preventable.

Remember the basics: Water, Shade, Rest.

Take breaks before you feel sick, check in on your crew and family, and know the signs of heat illness.

In May, Terrain analyst Matt Woolf published a report called “A Time For Reflection On The Almond Market,” taking a 30,000-foot view of the industry by looking at the key strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats shaping the market today and into the foreseeable future. In this webinar, he takes the opposite approach by looking at grower financials on the ground and where they might be headed as prices continue to rise. While the market remains in a period of transition, there are reasons for cautious optimism. Join us as Matt connects the big-picture view to the orchard returns.
