Over the past three days, the members of Monclova Township Professional Firefighters Local 5450 partnered with our brothers and sisters from the Maumee Professional Firefighters and Paramedics Local 4536 for intensive live fire training.
Joint evolutions like this provide invaluable, realistic hands-on experience that keeps our crews sharp and ready to respond. Throughout the three days, firefighters pushed through high heat and zero-visibility conditions to focus on core operational priorities, including aggressive interior fire suppression, coordinated hose line advancement, water application techniques, and rapid search and rescue tactics to locate and remove trapped victims under realistic fireground conditions.
Working side by side with Maumee Fire strengthens the coordination, communication, and inter-agency teamwork that directly benefit the communities we both protect every single day. When emergency calls come in, seamless mutual aid saves lives and property.
A huge thank you to City of Maumee Fire & EMS for the excellent collaboration, and to the instructors and safety officers who made these productive, safe evolutions possible.

Maumee Police are soliciting the public's help with a hit-skip incident that involved a Monclova Township Fire ~ Rescue Department ambulance.

Around 7:20 p.m. on Monday, September 21, a Monclova Township Fire & Rescue crew was transporting patient to the hospital when a vehicle pulled out and sideswiped the 2023 unit, according to chief Matt Homik.

The ambulance was driving without lights and sirens on Manley Road in Maumee when a blue Cadillac pulled out of Timberline and was left of center. Quick thinking by the ambulance driver prevented the accident from being a head-on collision, as she veered the ambulance off the road, Homik told Monclova Township, Ohio trustees during a recent meeting. The Cadillac driver reportedly took off without stopping.

While the damage was limited to trim, scratches and paint, Maumee Police are looking for any video of the incident. These can be emailed to [email protected].

Happy Labor Day from Monclova Township Professional Firefighters, IAFF Local 5450.

Station 91 is staffed, just like every other day of the year. Our members will be on duty this Labor Day answering calls while our community grills out, floats the river, and enjoys the long weekend. That's the job, and we're proud to do it.

Labor Day exists because working people organized. Everything that protects a firefighter on the job; minimum staffing, turnout gear standards, cancer presumption, a pension you can actually retire on, and the right to sit across the table and be heard. This came from members who stood together and made it happen. None of it was handed to us.

To every union member in Northwest Ohio: thank you. To our brothers and sisters riding out the holiday, stay safe.

‼️MONCLOVA/WATERVILLE MONCLOVA
We know construction is inconvenient and detours are not fun but apparently, many drivers think road closed signage is optional. It's only day three of this closure and some drivers are doing the one thing multiple layers of signage before the intersection tell you not to do.

Multiple drivers have been seen using the temporary access path created through Monclova Elementary's north lot, despite it being marked for "Emergency Vehicles only."

The Lucas County Sheriff's Office has been asked to cite drivers illegally using the emergency access path. It's not a shortcut—it's there so first responders can get through when seconds matter, not so you can save yourself a handful of minutes or miles while putting road workers, yourself or the road project itself at risk. You can prepare your commute by leaving earlier. Emergencies don't work that way.

One Team, One Mission!

MONCLOVA TOWNSHIP – Monclova Township Public Works employees David Clark and Greg Nye were following one another out of Clearwater subdivision in a pickup and a chipper truck on July 9 when they saw something unusual: a teen on an e-bike that was billowing white smoke, then “fireballs” as he drove east on Monclova Road.

The two blocked the road to traffic with their vehicles and jumped out to assist the 14-year-old as he dismounted the bike. While Clark stayed with the teen – who also was assisted by two women who left before sharing their names – Nye grabbed an extinguisher from the truck and worked to put out the fire coming from the lithium battery.

Clark believes the teen was still riding 20 mph or more when the fire started, and it took until the Waterside entrance for him to slow down enough to exit the bike. “He probably didn’t know what was going on. When he jumped off, it was a pretty big fire,” he said.

Fire Chief Matt Homik said the two men were able to keep the fire down until crews arrived. The teen was transported to Toledo Children’s Hospital. Later, Holland learned from the boy’s family that he was taken to University of Michigan for burn treatments, noting that it’s not life-threatening.

Public Works Supervisor Doug Holland credits the two employees for their quick thinking. "I think they deserve the keys to the city – except they already have them," he said.
