Yesterday, Tony and I had a grand time at Juniper Village with the Seniors. One of the residents turned 100 earlier this month. She said she enjoyed the drumming and did a little dance.

Dante and I participated again this year in Shaler Elementary School's end-of-year Fun Days: three days, twelve 15-minute drum circles a day, and approximately 900 students.

The Ibeji Drum Ensemble is what happens when rhythm decides it’s tired of being background noise and steps fully into main-character energy.
Created in 1995 and powered by twins (which already tells you the universe was involved), this isn’t just a drum group—it’s a cultural transmission device disguised as a performance. You thought you were coming to a show? No. You’ve accidentally enrolled in a masterclass, a history lesson, and a spiritual wake-up call—all at once, and you will clap on beat by the end, whether you planned to or not.
“Ibeji” means twins, but don’t get it twisted—this ensemble moves like it has at least eight arms, twelve rhythms, and zero tolerance for off-tempo nonsense. They don’t just play drums; they summon timelines. Every performance feels like your ancestors RSVP’d “yes” and showed up early.
Education? Check. Entertainment? Check. Transformation? Also, check, but nobody warned you about that part.
They’ve been “edu-taining” audiences before it was trendy, before it was branded, before people figured out you could Google the cultures they’ve been preserving in real time. Schools, stages, community spaces—you name it, they’ve turned it into a heartbeat.
Warning: prolonged exposure may result in spontaneous dancing, unexpected knowledge of West African traditions, and a deep urge to respect the drum.
The Ibeji Drum Ensemble: Not a group. A whole frequency.
