Happy Women’s History Month!
We are honored to have Gwen at our community. Gwen is one of our sweetest and loving residents we have. Gwen’s daughter, Bonnie, gave us an insight into the history and accomplishments of her life
Bonnie Writes:
Gwendolyn Esters had a nursing career that spanned over 32 years beginning as a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) in Detroit , MI. and then relocating to LA working 12 years at Kaiser Permanente Hospital Sunset. Later in life, she returned to school and she was in the second class of registered nurses(RN) to graduate from LASC and the first group of all African-American Registered Nurses in Southern California. As a professional nurse she helped to open King/Drew Medical Center obstetric/gynecology clinic and taught family planning. Her teaching skills earned her position as a health educator at Charles Drew Postgraduate Medical School and she was also an instructor/trainer for the American Red Cross. Due to her vast knowledge of parenting and prenatal care, Gwen both volunteered and became a professional facilitator, trainer and workshop speaker. She has won numerous awards including the prestigious Clara Barton Award, the highest honor bestowed by the American Red Cross. Among other awards and recognitions received by Gwen are: The American Red Cross Spotlight Award, The LA Mayor Tom Bradley Recognition, Social Work Award, Hearts for Youth Gala Award, Alumnus of the Year Award (LASC), Zeta Phi Beta Soroity Community Service Award and numerous others.
Gwen was married to her loving husband for better than 60 years. They have 4 children, and a number of grand and great grandchildren that are continuing to grow in number. She continues to live a life cherished and loved by all who meet her.
Thank you for all your wonderful work and dedication to your profession, family and community! 💜
