A new report from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Legal Reform looked at hundreds of trucking verdicts and settlements from June 2023 through July 2026. The median verdict jumped from $760,000 in 2023 to $3 million in the first half of 2026. Median settlements rose from $210,000 to $2.2 million.

Meanwhile, the fatal crash rate for large trucks dropped from 2.23 per 100 million miles in 2000 to 1.45 in 2024. Trucks are getting safer, and the legal bills are going the other direction.

New for the 2026-27 school year, the Road Team has seven captains after adding four new volunteer drivers from across the state—the largest roster, Senior Captain Cecil “Charlie” Salter can recall in his nearly a decade on the team.

The new captains are Nathan Heflin of LB3 Inc. in Wedowee; William Brandon and Russell Cottingham, both of FedEx in Decatur; and Danny Clark of R.E. Garrison in Vinemont. They join longtime captains Salter, Richard Pratt and Lloyd Howell, replacing several drivers who had retired in recent years.

The Alabama Trucking Board of Directors has voted unanimously to select Chris Cooper as the association’s Interim President, effective December 1, 2026. Cooper is the former CEO of Boyd Bros. Transportation, a past Chairman of the Board, and the current President of the Alabama Trucking Foundation.

Mark Colson, who has led Alabama Trucking since 2019, was named President and CEO of the American Trucking Associations. He takes the national post December 1. Cooper will serve as Interim President as the association determines its long term plans to fill the vacancy left by Colson’s departure to Washington.

For the more than 125,000 Alabamians who earn a living in Alabama’s trucking industry, the message is simple: the association’s advocacy in Montgomery and Washington keeps rolling without missing a gear.

The Trucking Association Executives Council (TAEC) Task Force has received the American Trucking Associations’ 2026 Mike Russell Trucking Image Award for developing the Trucking Resurgence: The Fight for Fairness and Safety action plan.

The national initiative focuses on addressing regulatory loopholes, strengthening safety enforcement and targeting noncompliant carriers, brokers and electronic logging device providers.

The economy had a three-year run at the top. But with a global supply crisis and no known timeline for reduction, fuel prices have become the number one concern for both drivers and carriers.

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) unveiled its 22nd annual Top Industry Issues report on Sunday, Oct. 18, at ATA’s Management Conference & Exhibition in Charlotte, N.C. Fuel prices jumped 17 spots to land at No. 1, and for the first time, drivers ranked it as their top concern too.

The American Trucking Associations today named Mark Colson, president and CEO of the Alabama Trucking Association, as its next President and CEO, effective Dec. 1, 2026. Colson will become the 10th president and CEO in the history of the nation’s largest trucking trade association, founded in 1933.

Colson has led Alabama Trucking since 2019, when he succeeded longtime CEO Frank Filgo. During his tenure, he brought new life and vitality to the association, expanding its advocacy, safety, workforce development efforts and public relations work on behalf of Alabama’s trucking industry. Before joining Alabama Trucking, he held leadership roles at the Business Council of Alabama, including interim president, senior vice president of governmental affairs and chief of staff.

In my 31 years as a professional driver, times of natural disaster and emergency are when I am most proud of our professional drivers and our industry.

The trucking industry plays a vital role in disaster relief efforts across the country. Truck drivers, fleet operators, logistics companies and independent owner-operators all work together to transport essential goods to affected communities.

With the 2026 midterm elections on everyone’s mind, Alabama’s trucking industry gathered in Prattville, Ala. on a beautiful fall day for the annual ATA Golf Classic, the key fundraiser for the Association’s political action committee, TRUK PAC, which supports candidates in state and local elections.

Hosted October 5-6 at the Robert Trent Jones Capitol Hill course, the event drew 356 golfers who filled all three courses.
