Pro tip: Emergency calls the day before a holiday for oven repairs are every appliance repair companies worst nightmare. We are all typically booked at least a day or two out and can’t possibly get to all the customers requesting emergency same day service. If there are any appliance “pros” waiting around for their phones to ring the day before a holiday for same day service I can guarantee either:
A.) they are a fly by night service, with no ability or intention to fix anything but rather deem your appliance unrepairable and collect a service charge or:
B.) an extremely overpriced service that literally charges such high rates they only need one service call a day to stay in business.
So on to the pro tip: testing oven function is simple. For gas ovens, set oven to preheat and start. You can watch or listen for burner ignition. If burner ignition takes more than 30 seconds from starting bake function the ovens igniter is getting weak. If it takes over a minute it’s very weak and nothing you try to bake will come out as planned since the oven won’t keep temperature.
For electrics, inspect both the bake and broil elements. Newer units often have hidden bake elements so this isn’t possible but you can still verify function. Elements that are bubbling, corroded or misshapen are likely to fail soon. A function test is simply turning the oven on to preheat and making sure both elements heat. DO NOT touch them with your bare hands to verify heating. They will glow when heating and there will be enough radiant heat to feel it from a distance. With a hidden bake element the cavity bottom will get warm after starting the oven to preheat.
Follow my Appliance pro tips and make sure all your appliances function as they should. Especially when you need them most. Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving Day!!
