Concrete curb does not fail all at once. It fails at the edge, one winter at a time.

Salt gets in. Water freezes behind the face. The top edge spalls, then chips, and by year five the line you poured straight is not straight anymore.

Granite does not spall. It is the same stone at year twenty that it was the day it was set. That is why so much of the curb you see on older roads around here is granite, and it is still there.

Most wet set failures get blamed on the stone.

They're almost never the stone.

They're an unreinforced slab. Pea gravel instead of clean angular base. A slab that never got its pitch. A bond coat somebody skipped to save twenty minutes a pallet. Open joints letting water sit where it can freeze.

The bluestone is the last inch and a half of a system that's a foot deep. When the section is built right, the stone outlives everybody who worked on it.
