Think of your team as a "staffing stew." 🍲

When you're hiring, it's not about finding a square peg for a square hole. It's about looking at your current team, figuring out what components or flavors you are lacking—whether that's a little salt or a little pepper—and finding the right human to bring it all together.

A senior title doesn’t automatically make someone a strategic thinker.

Strong strategic thinkers connect today’s decisions to tomorrow’s goals. They ask why the work matters, anticipate what comes next, and understand how their decisions affect the bigger picture.

During interviews, don’t just ask what candidates accomplished.

Ask why they made the decisions they did.

That answer can tell you more about their strategic ability than a job title ever will.

Why is hiring salespeople so incredibly difficult? 🤔

It’s not just about finding someone who can do the job—it’s about finding the perfect mix of passion, drive, and personality. You need someone who can close business without being overly "salesy," and it often takes months to truly know if they are the right fit as they work to build up their book of business.

You need someone who can see where the business is going. But you also need someone who can roll up their sleeves and make progress today.

For growing companies with lean teams, hiring separate people for strategy and ex*****on isn’t always realistic.

The key is knowing how much of each the role actually requires before you start your search. A 70% executor and 30% strategist may be exactly what you need.

Define the balance first, then hire for it.

When it comes to recruiting, candidates who bring genuine passion and excitement for the role are always the most interesting.

While they might not tick every single box on the skill set list right away, passion can't be taught—but the technical skills can.

Does your cybersecurity job description describe what the role actually needs, or everything you’d love to find?

Before interviewing, separate your requirements into three categories:

✓ Skills needed on day one
✓ Skills that can be learned in 30, 60, or 90 days
✓ Gaps that would create unacceptable risk

A clearer scorecard makes it easier to recognize strong candidates without waiting around for a cybersecurity unicorn.

Stratice can help you look beyond keywords and find the talent your team actually needs.

Are you getting too narrow with your job descriptions? Including too many hyper-specific, quasi-similar technologies can shrink your talent pool drastically.

The more restrictive you are, the harder it becomes to find the right person—and the more expensive it will get to hire them.

Keep your requirements open enough to attract great talent, or you might end up looking for a handful of people who don't exist.

Being flexible doesn’t mean lowering the bar.

For roles involving incident response, sensitive systems, compliance, infrastructure security, or security leadership, certain gaps can create real business risk.

That’s especially true when a candidate lacks security fundamentals, struggles to communicate risk, or doesn’t have the judgment the position requires.

Know where you can flex. Know where you need to stand firm.

When implementing brand-new technology, finding talent who already knows how to use it can be nearly impossible.

Instead of searching for the perfect candidate, consider how you will train a candidate who meets must-have criteria.

Cybersecurity isn’t standing still. Your hiring criteria shouldn’t either.

Instead of only asking what a candidate knows today, look for evidence that they can keep learning.

Have they adapted to new tools? Taken on new responsibilities? Applied certifications to real-world challenges? Solved problems they hadn’t seen before?

The candidate who can learn may bring more long-term value than the one who simply checks today’s boxes.
