Most business owners check the profit and loss and think:

“We made money. We’re good.”

Then the bank, a buyer, or your CPA looks at the balance sheet and says:

“Okay… but what is this?”

Old loans that were paid off years ago.
Vendor balances no one recognizes.
Assets that were sold but are still hanging around.
Credit cards showing balances that aren’t real.

Your balance sheet is basically the junk drawer of your financials.

You can ignore it for a while—but eventually, someone important is going to open it.

And that matters when you’re trying to get a loan, sell the business, bring in a partner, or shut everything down.

Profit tells you how the business performed.

The balance sheet tells you what you’re actually left with.
