Okay, we are LONG overdue for a reintroduction! 🫣😆

👋 I’m Lizzy, the postpartum doula behind Ascend Doula Care in Monticello, MN. I’m the proud and grateful wife to my husband John and mom to “Baby D” who somehow is now a toddler.

Doula style: Compassionate, intuitive, down-to-earth, validating, sometimes providing comedic relief (intended or unintended)

After becoming certified, I opted to start my own company (ADC) rather than work for an agency so I could serve moms/families without violating my conscience. 😷💉

While I don’t (and am not qualified to) offer medical care or advice, my clients have appreciated that I prefer an integrative/functional approach to health and wellness for my family (basically, crunchy-leaning but taking the best of both worlds in Western and natural/alternative medicine). We’re each unique, and I am absolutely FASCINATED how brilliantly and intricately we were designed! 🤯 It’s kind of one of my geekish obsessions 🤓

As a postpartum doula, I support new moms and their families before and after birth via in-home and/or virtual support since babies don’t come home with a personalized how-to manual and because we all need support after giving birth, especially in those first few months. From spit-up to dirty diaper changes to helping with breastfeeding 🤱🏻 when mom is having a meltdown and covered in mystery substances, there’s not much in a home with a baby that fazes me at this point. 😅 I’ve seen a lot, and I’ve been there too!

I’m currently accepting new clients, and as Baby D. grows and our family’s schedule changes, I’ll have even more availability than I currently do, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to inquire about openings!

Whether you’re in the thick of the postpartum period or looking for ways to prepare ahead of time, I would love to connect to answer questions as you discern what’s best for you! I’m happy to respond to DMs, emails, and comments (or texts/phone calls if we’re already connected). ☺️ Let’s get you the support you’ve been hoping for!

More social, less media…and we’re open for business!

With Baby D. being so observant as he learns more about the world around him, I’m working on spending less time on social media and more time with him and other people in real life. Thankfully, that also means we’re back to offering in-person support alongside our virtual services! 😃 Until further notice, these are the services we’re offering:

1-2 Hour Mini Shifts (NEW! 🥳).
• Hands-on help so new moms pregnant OR postpartum – can shower, eat, nap, or have help around the house while you do your thing or prepare for baby’s arrival with a trained support professional (and fellow mom)!
• $35/hr and includes a discount on any virtual support
• Currently available to new moms in or near Monticello, Buffalo, or Hugo, MN. Smoke-free homes only to avoid putting Baby D. at risk💙

Virtual Support Sessions🤳
• A great option for extra Q&A, moms who want to spend more time processing their experiences, pregnant mamas (dads are welcome to join if moms prefer) preparing for postpartum recovery and newborn care, moms who aren’t local but want to talk with a likeminded professional, etc.
• Pick my brain on anything from baby registry items to basic lactation/breastfeeding challenges to meal prep/postpartum nutrition and pretty much anything in between!
• More availability for scheduling on my end
• $25 for one session, $20/session when booking multiple calls or after receiving in-person support (ie. a mini shift)
• Available via Zoom, phone call, and/or Signal

Accidental bedsharing is WAYYY different from bedsharing while following the Safe Sleep 7 in terms of safety!

Most parents end up bedsharing at some point despite fear tactics, so let’s talk about how to do that SAFELY! 📣

When you hear the words “Virtual postpartum doula support,” what comes to mind? If you pictured someone uselessly watching your sweet baby in a screen so you can shower, don’t worry…that’s not in the description! 😂 The flow of the sessions is largely determined by the mom, and it might include any of the following and more:

•Starting preparations for postpartum life during pregnancy (or maybe even before!)
•Processing your birth story and/or other unexpected challenges
•Asking lots of questions (“Is this normal?” “Who would I talk to about ___?” What‘s your opinion on ___?”)
•Talking with a compassionate, empathetic maternal support professional during the day or in the evenings
•Brainstorming with you to minimize or help you and your baby overcome challenges
•Picking my brain on anything from baby registry items to basic lactation/breastfeeding challenges to meal prep/postpartum nutrition…and pretty much anything in between!
•Strategizing to onboard in-person support

What do you think could be the best way to spend a virtual support session? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Know a mama who may appreciate this kind of support? Feel free to share this post with her in case she’s unfamiliar with the option and to let her know you’re thinking of her!

To learn more, shoot ADC a DM or send Lizzy an email (see ADC’s page).

Let’s talk pelvic floor! Here are some of my favorite tips:

💯Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy: My #1 recommendation by far!

👩🏻‍⚕️Don’t skip the 6-week postpartum checkup. If they don’t automatically check for prolapse or other complications, you may want to ensure they do so. You have nothing to lose by asking for a referral for pelvic floor PT, especially if you experience incontinence or other symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction. I think they should be written routinely postpartum!

🚽 Avoid straining when using the toilet. I’d recommend looking into a Squatty Potty (I know😆), which may help with the dreaded BMs after giving birth and lower the risk of hemorrhoids and constipation.

🛏 Rest to help your pelvic organs to settle back into place sooner and reduce pelvic pressure.

🛀 Do the Sitz baths!

💧Hydration for tissue repair and BMs, especially if you’ve taken a laxative

💊 Magnesium – Oral supplements are often preferred for constipation, and stress can quickly deplete magnesium. (For other ways to boost your magnesium intake in general, I’d suggest Epsom salt baths and looking into Earthley’s Good Night Lotion - Link in bio + use discount code SLEEPTIGHT for 20% off today, 12/18/23! We use the lotion ourselves and for Baby D’s massages.☺️)

🍐🍇 Fiber-rich fruits to soften stools – Many fruits that start with the letter “P” can be helpful!

😮‍💨 When squatting and lifting your baby or anything heavy, bend at the knees, exhale, and contract transverse abdominal muscles.

🧣If babywearing, use good posture and periodically gauge whether or not pressure on your belly puts a strain on your pelvic floor. If it is, consider using your wrap/carrier less frequently, for a shorter duration each time. Opting for an ring sling might be helpful at times.

📚 Learn about HOW our bodies are designed to labor and give birth. The more we can stay in line with that, the less likely we are to unintentionally push ourselves too far (literally), putting extra strain on the pelvic floor.

So…Rather than sharing about how I’m preparing for postpartum, I guess I’ll be sharing about some things we did to prepare and some of my favorite things now that Baby D. is here! He’s the sweetest little guy with the most expressions of any newborn we’ve met, and we are so in love with him and grateful for the undeserved blessing of being his parents!

Experiencing some of what my clients have gone through firsthand has been humbling and deepened my admiration for them and every other good mom (and, heck, even every half decent mom out there), and I’m already a better doula for it.

I’m looking forward to sharing about some of the products, resources, and tips that have been helpful to me! Some of them were things I’d expected to utilize, and others have been unexpectedly helpful. I look forward to sharing about both in between naps, feedings, snuggles, and the endless diaper changes!

Don’t get pulled in to the cycle of supplementing.
Look for true markers of nutritional needs being met, don’t fall into the myths.

Some of my favorite ways to lower stress quickly:
* Snacks (Bonus if it includes dark chocolate for a serotonin boost😉)
* Grabbing a quick sip of water or another beverage
* A deep breath or two to activate the parasympathetic nervous system
* Earplugs or earbuds (when safe)
* Bathroom breaks
* Asking myself, “What might be going on here that I’m missing?

What are your favorite ways to lower stress quickly? I’d love to know!

Oh, and yes, the elevator was actually stuck! 😂 We were able exit by going to the second floor (vs. main floor) after about minutes.

Within minutes of birth, babies typically can instinctively find their way to the breast by following the familiar scent of amniotic fluid. They are still able to detect the scent on their own hands, and Moms’ Montgomery glands secrete a substance that smells and tastes very similar.
Do you know any moms who would find this fascinating? I know I do!
