*Greyhead Mountain Fire
Telluride Fire dispatched 7 firefighters, 3 engines, and an UTV today (Friday) to assist the USFS for small fire on USFS land on Greyhead Mountain, about 6 miles West of Telluride near the Telluride airport. The fire is believed to have started from a dry lightning strike to a single tree late last night and was assessed by Telluride Fire crews who then contacted USFS to formulate a plan. At 6am this morning (Friday), crews from Telluride Fire and the USFS attempted to access the fire by hiking; however, the terrain proved to be too hazardous to continue. Air resources were ordered and dropped approximately 5,000 gallons of water in 12 total drops to suppress the fire, which burned a total of 5 trees on about 1/4 acre. Crews coordinated water supply locations and logistics for the air drops. A large portion of brush was successfully extinguished and is currently smoldering. The area is surrounding by scree fields, and there is no danger of spread. The USFS is monitoring the area and will continue to do so into tomorrow. Telluride Fire and the USFS thanks the many residents of Hastings Mesa who allowed crews to use their ponds as sources for water supply. And thank you to all of our brave firefighters! *Repost from Telluride Fire Protection District
