No matter how you calculate it, poor record keeping adds up to lost money. From lost tax deductions to time spent looking for receipts.
A few Bookkeeping Tips:
• Keep track of deductible expenses: You may forget expenses when you prepare your tax return unless you record them when they occur. Believe me you will need all the deductible expenses you can find.
• Keep track of all income
• Keep track of all business documents: You must keep your business records available at all times for inspection by the IRS. If the IRS examines any of your tax returns, you may be asked to explain the items reported. A complete set of records will speed up the examination.

Good Record Keeping will help you to:
• Monitoring the success or failure of your business: It's hard to know how your business is doing without a clear financial picture. Am I making money? Are sales increasing? Are expenses increasing faster than sales? Which expenses are too high based on my level of sales? Are some expenses out of control?
• Providing the information you need to make decisions: Evaluating the financial consequences should be a part of every business decision you make. Without accurate records and financial information it may be hard for you to know the impact of a given course of action.
• Budgeting: All businesses should use a budget for planning purposes. A budget will help keep your finances on track by forecasting your cash needs and helping you control expenditures.
• Preparing your income tax return: With good records, preparing your tax return will be easier and you will be more likely to be able to do it on time. Poor records may result in you underpaying or overpaying your taxes and/or filing late (and paying penalties). When your CPA prepares your tax return, poor records will almost certainly result in your paying higher costly accounting fees.

Whatever kind of business you run, you are required by law to keep financial records relating to it. The biggest problem we face in getting our records into order (and keeping them that way) is that most of us work on our own. It’s hard to find time for tasks like filing and bookkeeping when it’s just you.
The task of record keeping is usually procrastinated until the very last minute, when it is required, such as time to file your tax return. This can be a very daunting task if you have to dig through receipts and expenses for the whole year!
There are a number of business benefits to be gained from keeping accurate and up-to-date records. It saves you time, and money, and helps you to be confident that you're only paying the tax you owe.
