The Faces Behind the Negatives

THE SUITCASE • ENTRY 05 June 2026

What began as a collection of unidentified negatives from Long Island has become something far more personal.

After sharing earlier entries, family members helped identify many of the people in these photographs. These images are from my grandfather’s mother’s side of the family—the Vertles (spelling still being researched)—making the people in these photographs my own relatives.

Today’s images show multiple generations of the family: children posing proudly for the camera, family members gathered around early automobiles, and scenes of everyday life preserved on film nearly a century ago. Several photographs appear to date from the late 1910s through the 1920s, including images of men wearing military-style uniforms from the World War I era.

What I once believed was a forgotten collection belonging to strangers has become a remarkable visual record of my own family’s history. Every negative adds another piece to the story and another face to the family tree.

These are no longer unidentified people from a suitcase.

They are family.

Today, Kevin Sean Studios reached a milestone that I never take for granted: 100 Five-Star Google Reviews.

When I started this business, it wasn't about numbers. It was about preserving memories, family histories, and pieces of the past that might otherwise be lost forever.

Over the years, I've had the privilege of working with thousands of photographs, film reels, videotapes, letters, journals, scrapbooks, and historical artifacts. Every project tells a story, and every client places an incredible amount of trust in me to preserve something that cannot be replaced.

Our 100th review came from a project involving the preservation of a historically significant journal connected to a world-renowned chess figure. It was a reminder that preservation isn't just about scanning images or transferring media. It's about protecting history and ensuring future generations can experience it.

To every client who has supported Kevin Sean Studios, left a review, referred a friend, or trusted me with their family's memories, thank you. Your support has allowed this small local business to grow into something truly meaningful.

Here's to the next chapter, the next story, and the next memory preserved.

Long Island’s Forgotten Past: The Mystery Solved

THE SUITCASE • ENTRY 01 June 2026

When I began sharing photographs from what I called The Suitcase, I believed I was documenting an unknown Long Island family whose identities had been lost to time.

Today, that mystery took an unexpected turn.

After seeing the photographs, my mother recognized many of the faces.

The people in these images are not strangers at all.

They are my family.

The negatives were passed down to me by my grandfather, a Yarrington, whose mother’s side of the family were the Vertles. What began as a historical preservation project has suddenly become something much more personal.

The older woman who appears throughout many of these photographs was my great-great-grandmother, a woman born in the 1800s whose image now survives more than a century later through these fragile negatives.

The young man who built the handmade airplane labeled Spirit of Long Island was my grandfather’s Uncle Jack.

The children, mothers, fathers, grandparents, beachgoers, gardeners, and farmers captured throughout this collection are not simply pieces of Long Island history. They are direct branches of my own family tree.

These photographs appear to span the late 1910s through the 1930s, preserving everyday life during a period of enormous change. Some images show family gatherings and beach outings. Others capture homes, gardens, automobiles, aviation enthusiasm, and what may be a World War I-era soldier posing proudly with a young woman.

For days, I have been sharing these photographs as an unknown story from Long Island’s past.

Today, I learned that the story is my own.

And somehow, that makes this suitcase even more remarkable.

Every negative preserves a moment that would have otherwise been forgotten. Every face represents a life once lived. Every image is a reminder that history is not only found in museums and archives. Sometimes it is sitting quietly in a suitcase waiting for someone in the next generation to open it.

The mystery may be solved, but the journey is only beginning.

Long Island's Forgotten Past: Faces From the Suitcase

THE SUITCASE • 31 May 2026

With each negative we digitize, the mystery grows a little deeper.

This collection isn't filled with famous people or historic events. Instead, it captures something far more personal.

Family gatherings. Beach outings. Young couples posing proudly for the camera. Children playing in the yard. Mothers, fathers, grandparents, and friends whose names have long since been forgotten.

Yet nearly a century later, their smiles, celebrations, and everyday lives remain preserved inside a suitcase that somehow survived the passage of time.

Who were they?

Did they know their photographs would outlive them?

And how many stories are still waiting to be uncovered within the remaining negatives?

For now, the suitcase keeps its secrets.

Live a Second Life Through the Eyes of the Past.

Long Island’s Forgotten Past: The Airplane in the Yard

THE SUITCASE • 30 May 2026

The more we dig through this forgotten suitcase, the stranger the story becomes.

Among the family photographs appears a homemade airplane. Not a toy. Not a model.

An airplane large enough for a child to climb inside.

Its name was painted proudly across the side:

“Spirit of Long Island.”

Beneath it, another clue.

“Patchogue-Lindbergh Airport.”

Who built it?

Was it a tribute to the golden age of flight? A community project? A father’s dream for his children?

For now, the answers remain hidden somewhere within the negatives.

Tomorrow, another piece of the puzzle.

Live a Second Life Through the Eyes of the Past.

Long Island’s Forgotten Past: The Mystery Hidden Inside an Old Suitcase

THE SUITCASE • 29 May 2026

It sat forgotten for decades.

Inside was a collection of negatives belonging to a Long Island family, capturing moments that were never meant to be seen by strangers nearly a century later.

Children at the shoreline. Early automobiles. Family homes. Horse-drawn wagons. Even a homemade airplane connected to Patchogue’s aviation history.

Who were they?

Why were these negatives carefully saved?

And how did they end up together inside an old suitcase?

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing the images exactly as they were found and digitized, one clue at a time.

Welcome to The Suitcase.
