Someone asked if I use AI, and I gave a terrible answer.

Twice in the last few months, a client has asked me some version of the same question: Are you using AI to write our content?

And both times, I gave a bad answer. Not a dishonest one -- a rambling one. I said yes, and then spent the next four minutes qualifying it, and the sad part is I could hear myself sounding defensive about something I don't actually feel defensive about.

That's when I decided that I need to properly write out how I use AI. It's (past) time.

But as I started documenting my writing process, I realized that almost none of it is new. I've had the same process for nearly two decades. The only thing AI has changed is that I don't start from a blank page anymore.

Everything else ... I've always done.

Liz Weaver and I talking strategy. We share several remodeling clients and meet regularly to discuss tactics to improve their visibility.

Content. Website UX. Technical. PPC. Fan-out Queries. Off-line Marketing. It's all still connected and needs a team that understands it all and isn't afraid to approach it holistically.

There’s a lot of noise right now around AI search, SEO, and β€œwhat remodelers need to do next.”

And honestly? I think some of the conversation is missing the bigger picture.

The residential construction companies that stay visible long term probably won’t be the ones chasing every new tactic. They’ll be the ones building trustworthy visibility from the start:
- real projects
- real expertise
- strong service pages, and
- clear digital foundations

I wrote about that in my latest article:

You just wrapped one of your best projects.

The photos are stunning. The clients are thrilled. Your crew did exceptional work.

And then what happens?

The photos go into a folder. A few make it to Instagram. Your office manager uploads the best ones to your portfolio page. You move on to the next job.

Meanwhile, somewhere in your market, a homeowner is sitting at her kitchen table at 10 pm typing "home addition contractor" into Google.

She has the budget. She's ready to call someone this week. Yet, she's not finding you.

Not because your work isn't good enough. But because Google doesn't know your best project exists.

The fix isn't a new website or more social posts. It's something called a project story β€” a dedicated, searchable page built around a single completed project.

I've been working with remodelers and builders on exactly this β€” and the traffic data from real clients tells a pretty compelling story.
