🚨 Did you know? According to The National Institute on Aging (NIA), nearly 80% of falls in the home occur in the bathroom.

For older adults, a slippery floor or a hard-to-reach towel can suddenly become a major hazard. The good news is that a few simple tweaks can make a world of difference for your loved one's independence and your peace of mind! 💙

Here are 3 quick ways to make the bathroom safer this weekend:

1️⃣ Add Non-Slip Mats: Ditch the decorative rugs! Place rubber-backed, non-slip mats both inside the tub/shower and right outside of it.

2️⃣ Install Proper Grab Bars: Towel racks are not built to hold body weight. Install sturdy grab bars near the toilet and inside the shower to give them something reliable to hold onto.

3️⃣ Brighten Things Up: Add motion-sensor nightlights so that late-night trips to the bathroom are always well-lit.

Safety is always our top priority at Happy to Help Caregiving. If you ever need an extra set of hands or eyes to help keep your loved one safe at home, we are just a phone call away at 304-244-1987!

Today we celebrated West Virginia Day a little early with some true Mountain State favorites! 💙💛

From pepperoni rolls from Abruzzino’s, to Mister Bee Potato Chips (proudly made right here in WV), to Golden Delicious apples, the official state fruit that was first discovered in West Virginia, we enjoyed a taste of what makes our state so special. 🍎

The team at Happy to Help Caregiving had the privilege of joining our friends at The Village at Heritage Point to celebrate together, share some local favorites, and cheer on WVU Baseball as they continue their incredible College World Series run! ⚾️

We are grateful for opportunities like these to connect with our community and celebrate the people, places, and traditions that make West Virginia home. ❤️

If you’ve been researching senior care or talking to your parent's doctor, you’ve probably heard the terms "ADLs" and "IADLs." But what do those acronyms actually mean for your family? 🤔

Let’s break through the healthcare jargon! They simply describe the two different categories of daily tasks required to live safely and independently at home.

🔵 ADLs (Activities of Daily Living): These are the basic, fundamental skills needed for personal, physical care.

➡️Bathing and hygiene
➡️Dressing and grooming
➡️Using the restroom safely
➡️Mobility (assistance getting in and out of bed or a chair)
➡️Assistance with eating

🟢 IADLs (Instrumental Activities of Daily Living): These are the slightly more complex tasks required to manage a household.

➡️Meal planning and cooking
➡️Light housekeeping and laundry
➡️Grocery shopping and running errands
➡️Medication reminders
➡️Transportation to appointments

The good news? Our caregivers help with BOTH. 💙

Whether your loved one just needs someone to handle the laundry and cook a hot dinner a few days a week (IADLs), or needs hands-on assistance safely navigating the shower and getting dressed (ADLs), our team is trained and ready to step in.

You don't have to manage the workload alone. If you're noticing your parent struggling with tasks on either of these lists, send us a message or call us today to see how we can support your family.

Raising your own kids while caring for an aging parent? You’re officially part of the "Sandwich Generation", and if you’re feeling completely exhausted right now, your feelings are 100% valid.
We see so many family caregivers burn out because they put themselves last. Here is your friendly reminder to put your own "oxygen mask" on first:

1️⃣ Drop the Guilt: You cannot be in two places at once. Doing your best is enough.
2️⃣ Ask for SPECIFIC Help: Instead of saying "I'm overwhelmed," ask a sibling or friend, "Can you pick up Dad's prescriptions this Tuesday?"
3️⃣ Take Micro-Breaks: Even 10 minutes alone in the car with your favorite music counts as a mental reset.

If you are running on empty, let us step in. Our caregivers can provide a few hours of weekly "respite care" so you can attend your kid's events, run errands, or just take a well-deserved nap.
