Published today a risk assessment of L. pneumophila in drinking water distribution systems. The analysis shows a low risk in the systems studied. Some would say "with a low risk I shouldn't bother about Legionella." But I think the study shows that monitoring can proceed to validate water management practices at levels below tolerable risks. The study should remove the fear of monitoring so that the low levels naturally occurring in distribution systems don't become out of control and pose a public health risk.

I am pleased to announce that my latest article "The Case for Monitoring for Legionella pneumophila in Drinking Water Distribution Systems" has been published in Water as part of the Special Issue Legionella: A Key Organism in Water Management and is available for free online at:
Website: https://lnkd.in/gxQBxRFX
PDF Version: https://lnkd.in/gs44Ffet

A review of 930 outbreaks in the US from 1973 to 2023 found that none were caused by non-pneumophila species of Legionella in public water systems or buildings (other than health care), leading to the conclusion that there is no public health justification to manage water systems or non-health care buildings for any other species other than L. pneumophila. Read the paper to find additional support for L. pneumophila monitoring.

In Washington DC today. This is the view from the conference room. Great discussions with EPA, state regulators and water utilities on how to improve drinking water regulations. Presented on our Legionella research.

Published a review article today on "Opportunistic Pathogens in Drinking Water Distribution Systems—A Review" with Toby Prosser and Melita Stevens! Many thanks to Melbourne Water for the project. The review covers 12 waterborne opportunistic pathogens and focuses on opportunities for control in drinking water distribution system. The paper is open access - so free to download!

In contrast to “frank” pathogens, like Salmonella entrocolitica, Shigella dysenteriae, and Vibrio cholerae, that always have a probability of disease, “opportunistic” pathogens are organisms that cause an infectious disease in a host with a weakened immune system and rarely in a healthy host...

Happy to report a paper published in AWWA Opflow on "Developing a Legionella pneumophila Monitoring Program for Utility Distribution Systems."

Water utilities must help protect public health by making sure water distribution systems are effectively treated to guard against dangerous levels of Legionella pneumophila.
