Colorado Headwaters Land Trust (CHLT) has just acquired a beautiful 125-acre conservation easement west of Kremmling, close to the National Forest! The easement was donated by the landowners, Herb and Kathleen Steffe, with financial assistance from Grand Countyโs Open Lands, Rivers, and Trails fund, and Colorado Headwaters Land Trust.
The Steffes have owned the property at least in part since 2007 as a recreational escape. They want to conserve the property to provide wildlife habitat in the mixed conifer forest and to protect the scenic viewsheds of the Kremmling region and neighboring public lands. The property and surrounding area have a long history of use and exploration. This rich history further contributes to its conservation value.
The Elkโs Vista Conservation Easement is home to a variety of wildlife species that roam throughout Grand County, including big game, predators, birds, and small mammals. The conservation easement is just south of Sheep Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River. The property borders Bureau of Land Management land as well as other undeveloped private holdings, and is within a mile of both the National Forest and the Enter Conservation Easement, an 84-acre easement granted to CHLT in May 2019. Conserving this property guarantees more contiguous open space and migratory pathways for all the resident species.
