Meet: Pooky, Dinker, and Baby (now nicknamed Artemis by me because he likes to fly to the moon) 🤣

For years multiple farriers refused to do them, even try them…I showed up to a client’s house to do her horses and lo and behold there were donkeys! She told me I wasn’t doing them because they were feral and no one would do them…. which I didn’t take as an answer and instantly started becoming friends with snacks and scritches.

Well, today I got to do these lovely intact jacks. It wasn’t smooth sailing but these boys exceeded expectations and the pics here show they still wanted to be around me and have some snacks post trims! That’s a great sign that in short order, I have no doubt, they will be good solid citizens. To all those farriers who refused, thanks! Your loss is my gain! Bestest of days doing what you love. šŸ’•

Did you know...

Donkeys have incredible hearing! They can hear another donkey's bray from up to 60 miles away.

That means even across vast desert landscapes, they can stay connected with their herd 🧔

Pretty amazing, right? Tell us in the comments if you’ve ever heard a donkey bray!

Washington clients! I’m heading your way! I’m looking forward to seeing you soon! Put in for good weather please!

I wasn’t able to attend the AFA Convention this year, but I am so very thankful to be recognized by my peers. Brian Strelow this magazine is as much your baby as it is mine. Thank you for all you do to make it a success. Here’s to another great year of the Northwest Farrier Magazine!

Today I’m just frustrated. I took the hacksaw to another overgrown donkey today. Why do people think this is okay? No eloquent long story about this sweet mini Jack today, I just don’t have it in me….but the look in his eyes that he gave me said enough, and it broke my heart….he was clearly in pain, and even with that he was truly a rockstar, all things considered. I’m just glad he is now in a place where he will receive the care he needs.

Whoever treats a donkey as if they are just stubborn, mean asses, is really just an ignorant ass themself. I have no doubt in my mind that he knew I was trying to help him and any resistance he showed was truly because he was in pain, not because he didn’t want to participate in what we were doing. Going to go hug my donkeys now….

Nala Update: You may recall the post about Nala, who had had bad farrier experiences and some long toes (see before pic below).

Today was the second time I trimmed her and I could not be more ecstatic! SO MANY WINS!
- Last time she was aloof and skeptical, today was skeptical, but curious!
- Marissa started her with ā€œtouch exercisesā€ and today she happily touched the lead rope, tools, etc. She also spent time practicing with picking up her front feet, and it shows!
- No sedation, I forgot to use lavender, she was being held in hand rather than tied, lots of distractions happening in the barn. She stood like a rock. She was stellar for her front feet!
- She was either nervous about her first hind foot or sensitive (she may have sustained an injury during the last cycle) and was a mildly sassy about picking it up, so we did use a rope to safely access it. But once the foot was up it wasn’t needed.
- For her other hind foot, no rope was needed and she calmly picked up her hind foot when asked.

Relationship is everything with a donkey. They are so smart, and just want to know that you will be kind and fair and that they can trust you. The best part was the end, whe she didn’t shy away from me when she was done, but leaned it…. ā¤ļø

You can see the progress we made in just two trims on her really bad hind foot. We still have a long way to go to grow out the distortion, but it’s coming!

Gizmo was jealous of the selfies so he says ā€œhelloā€ to all his Facebook fans too! šŸ˜‚

Meet Milton (and Marvin - his adorable headrest who was currently in the middle of getting his feet trimmed)….these two minis are the epitome of mini donkey perfection and I’m so glad they found me. Marvin and I will have a lot of fun, seeing as how he likes to have everything in his mouth, like my hoof knife, my towel, my hair…. 😳🤪
