They left UBS with no client information and zero assets at their new firm.

225 days later, Ox Road Capital crossed $1B in AUM.

But the story behind that remarkable transition began years earlier.

Michael Lee, Steve Armaly, and their partners had built a successful $1.2B business at UBS. Yet as their vision evolved, they began to question whether the employee model could support the enterprise they wanted to build.

The decision to leave wasn't easy. Four partners had to get aligned, significant recruiting economics were on the table, and moving from a non-Protocol firm brought additional challenges.

In this episode, Michael and Steve join Mindy Diamond to share what ultimately led them to independence, why they chose LPL Strategic Wealth Services, and how years of client trust helped make their transition possible.

It's a conversation about partnership, ownership, and the value of relationships built over decades.

Successful partnerships are built on alignment. But that alignment can change over time.

For financial advisor teams, different career horizons, ambitions, and appetites for risk can eventually lead partners to envision different futures—even when the business is thriving and the partnership itself remains strong.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the team should separate or that a move is the answer.

It does mean the differences are worth acknowledging.

In her latest article, Mindy Diamond explores what happens when one partner begins to want something more or simply different, why those conversations can be so difficult, and what advisors should consider before deciding what comes next.

Because sometimes the most important question isn’t whether the partnership still works.

It’s whether it still works for where everyone wants to go next.

46% chose independence. Just 24% moved to another wirehouse.

Those numbers tell part of the story of wirehouse advisor movement in the first half of 2026. But perhaps the bigger story is just how many options advisors now have.

More than 200 firms recruited at least one wirehouse advisor during the first six months of the year.
In this special Industry Update, Louis Diamond and Jason Diamond dig into the findings from our new 2026 H1 Advisor Transition Report: Wirehouse-Focused Edition and explore what the data reveals about where advisors are going, what’s driving their decisions, and how the competitive landscape is changing.

Barbara Herman has been part of Diamond Consultants since its early days, when the idea of advocating for advisors rather than recruiting on behalf of firms was still something new.

Today, as a Senior Consultant, she approaches that work much the way advisors approach their own clients: with care, objectivity and an understanding of just how important these decisions can be, both professionally and personally.

Get to know Barb and why advocating for advisors has been at the heart of her work at Diamond Consultants: https://hubs.ly/Q04zdlGX0

Three advisors. One starting point. Three very different paths forward.

Each had spent more than a decade at Edward Jones and built a successful practice. But when they began exploring what might come next, they weren’t trying to solve for the same thing.

One wanted greater autonomy and equity without giving up infrastructure and community.
Another wanted the flexibility to build a larger enterprise around his own brand.

The third wanted the collaboration and continuity that comes with a team.

Their destinations – Steward Partners, LPL Financial, and Raymond James – were different because their objectives were different.

And that’s the larger lesson.

It can be tempting to begin an exploration by asking where other advisors are going. But familiarity isn’t necessarily the best guide to what comes next.

A more useful starting point: What are you trying to accomplish?

Allie Brunwasser shares the stories of three Edward Jones advisors whose very different transitions demonstrate why defining the objective should come before choosing the destination.

What does it take to turn a $600mm breakaway into a $10.5B wealth management enterprise?

For David Bahnsen and The Bahnsen Group, the answer wasn’t acquisitions. Virtually all of that growth was organic.

It came from building an authentic content and thought leadership engine, continually reinvesting in people and capabilities, expanding the client experience, and being deliberate about what the firm should own versus what was better outsourced.

It also meant resisting a temptation familiar to many successful business owners: maximizing current income at the expense of investing for future growth.

Now, more than a decade after breaking away from Morgan Stanley, David is entering another chapter: selling The Bahnsen Group to longtime partner Hightower while maintaining significant autonomy over the business he built.

In the latest episode of our Build, Grow & Transact series, David joins Louis Diamond to discuss the decisions behind the firm’s growth, why enterprise value requires playing the long game, and how he’s thinking about organic and inorganic growth in the years ahead.

It’s a rare look at the complete arc from breakaway to business builder to transaction and the choices made along the way.

Independence has created extraordinary opportunities for financial advisors.
But does that mean every successful advisor should pursue it?

Not necessarily.

In his latest article, Jason Diamond looks at the other side of the independence conversation: 7 reasons why an advisor may be better served by a traditional firm.

Because the goal isn’t independence for independence’s sake. It’s finding the model that best supports your clients, your business, your team, and the career you want to build.

Growth is a goal for nearly every advisory firm. But pursuing more opportunities requires something advisors have in limited supply: time.

That makes capacity an increasingly important part of the growth equation.

In our latest podcast, AssetMark CEO and President Michael Kim shares the perspective he’s gained from working with thousands of independent financial advisors—and why the firms that grow most successfully tend to be intentional about where their advisors spend their time.

That means looking critically at what should remain on the advisor’s plate and what can be outsourced, delegated, or increasingly handled with the help of technology and AI.

Because as client expectations evolve, the advisor’s highest-value work is evolving, too.

Portfolio management is just one part of a much broader relationship that can include tax planning, wealth transfer, estate planning, business decisions, and the deeply personal conversations surrounding a client’s wealth.

As Michael puts it: “Advisors can do anything. They can’t do everything.”

It’s a practical discussion about organic growth, outsourcing, AI, scale, and how greater capacity can ultimately create room for a better client experience.
