Power returning to your Kansas City neighborhood does not necessarily mean your house is ready to receive it. Storm-damaged service equipment may need repairs before safe reconnection.

Stay clear of downed wires and damaged equipment. Evergy advises staying at least 35 feet away from downed power lines or limbs touching them. Report hazards to your utility, and call 911 for an immediate emergency.

Once the damage is handled, we start backup planning with a practical question: what do you need working during the next outage? Your essentials and expected runtime help guide the choice.

Our latest post walks through repair responsibilities and reconnection, then explains backup options. For a starting point on preparedness, try our free Home Resilience Assessment.

Before adding attic insulation to an older home, check the wiring while it is still visible.

Once blown insulation covers the attic, open splices, damaged cables, and questionable junction boxes become harder to find. They do not become safer.

We recommend an attic electrical inspection before signing an insulation contract. Identify older wiring, check recessed-light ratings and required clearances, and complete needed electrical work before the insulation crew arrives. Photograph cable routes and box locations before they are covered.

A newer-looking panel is not proof that the attic wiring was replaced. A little planning now can prevent an expensive search later.

A blinking light and a clicking fence charger don't tell you whether the fence is doing its job at the back pasture.

Before buying a bigger energizer, we recommend testing the whole system with a proper electric fence voltmeter. Check several points, then look at grounding and possible energy leaks: wet vegetation, cracked insulators, damaged underground leads, loose splices and wire touching metal posts.

Fall is a good time to find these problems before frozen ground and winter storms complicate repairs. Once the fence is working correctly, record voltage at the energizer and midpoint, then at the furthest point. Those baseline readings make future troubleshooting much faster.

Our latest post walks through the checks, including section isolation and protection on both sides of the energizer. For a broader look at your power readiness, start with our free Home Resilience Assessment.

An EV charger does not automatically require an electrical service upgrade.

We start with a simpler question: how many miles does the car need to recover overnight? A lower Level 2 setting may meet that need, even if the charger and vehicle are capable of more.

A load calculation should come before the upgrade decision. Panel space and service capacity are different issues, and managed charging may offer another way to work within existing capacity.

Our latest post explains what to compare before choosing full-output charging, a lower configured rate, managed charging, or a service upgrade. If you're planning home charging in the Kansas City Northland, you can book an estimate with Live Smart Electric & Solar.

Before asking how big a generator you need, ask what you cannot afford to have stop working.

At home, that might be refrigeration and heat. On a farm, it might be a well pump. For a business, it might be the equipment that keeps you open.

We start with three lists:
• What must keep running
• What can run occasionally
• What can wait

Then consider starting demand, which loads operate together, and how long the essentials need power—not just the numbers on appliance labels.

Our latest post walks through those questions, food-storage planning, and portable generator safety. Before shopping, spend 10 minutes identifying your five most important electrical loads.

Can you spot what’s wrong with this solar installation?

This system was producing power, but that did not mean it was installed correctly.

During a recent Kansas City solar inspection, we found a missing required neutral conductor, poorly sealed penetrations, improper outdoor fittings, and communication wiring zip-tied to the conduit.

Most homeowners would never know these problems were there because the system still appeared to be working.

Solar should be installed safely, correctly, and built to last.

Would you know who to call to inspect your system after the original installer leaves?

Happy Independence Day from Live Smart Electric & Solar. 🇺🇸

This Fourth of July is especially meaningful as our nation celebrates 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Before I became a master electrician and business owner, I had the privilege of serving alongside some incredible men and women in the U.S. Army. Those experiences gave me a deeper appreciation for the freedoms we celebrate today and for the generations of Americans who have sacrificed to protect them.

Today, I’m grateful to continue serving our community in a different way—helping families, businesses, farms, and churches keep what matters most powered, safe, and prepared.

As we celebrate 250 years of freedom, may we never take for granted the blessings we’ve inherited or the responsibility we share to preserve them for future generations.

Wishing you and your family a safe, joyful, and meaningful Independence Day.

Thank you to all who have served—and to those who continue to serve our country and our communities.

Be honest — how many things are charging in your house right now?

A charging lamp exploding inside a home is a reminder that electrical safety is not just about the breaker panel.

Modern homes are full of chargers, batteries, surge strips, extension cords, generators, solar equipment, and backup power systems.

That’s why we created our Live Smart Power Protection Plans — annual inspections designed to help homeowners stay ahead of electrical, solar, generator, surge protection, and everyday safety issues before they become bigger problems.

Protect the home. Protect the equipment. Protect the family.

Powering Today. Protecting Tomorrow.

Sometimes the most important part of a solar project isn’t the solar.

This project combined:

☀ Rooftop solar

🔨 A custom-built pergola

⚡ Solar and electrical integration

🏡 Covered outdoor living space

One of my favorite things about projects like this is finding ways to create more value than simply adding solar panels.

The result was additional solar production, usable outdoor living space, and a backyard feature the homeowner could enjoy every day.

Would you have put all the solar on the roof, or incorporated it into a structure like this?
