Tonight, as I lay my head on my pillow, my heart is incredibly heavy.
Not long ago, a precious husband and wife made Charis Home their new home. At the young ages of 90 and 91, we had the privilege of welcoming them into our family.
Just days ago, they celebrated an extraordinary milestone—71 years of marriage. Seventy-one years of loving, laughing, enduring, sacrificing, and walking through life side by side.
Tonight, we gently pushed their hospital beds together so he could be close to her as she prepares to walk into the arms of Jesus.
There are moments in caregiving that forever change you, and this is one of them.
Watching him hold onto the hand he’s held for more than seven decades is both heartbreaking and beautiful. His heart is breaking because he knows the love of his life will soon take her final earthly breath. Yet, through the tears, there is also peace. He knows this isn’t goodbye forever. He knows they’ll see each other again. And in his quiet words and gentle spirit, you can sense that he believes it won’t be long before he’s with her again.
Love like theirs reminds us that true commitment isn’t measured in years alone, but in every ordinary day spent choosing each other.
Tonight, my prayers are with this precious couple. What an honor it is to witness a love story that has stood the test of time, and what a sacred privilege it is to care for them during one of life’s most tender moments.
Please say a prayer for this sweet husband as he prepares to let go of the woman who has been his best friend, his partner, and the love of his life for 71 years.
