If you’re thinking about relocating, don’t choose a new state based only on climate, cost of living or proximity to family. Also review the tax implications.
For example, some states don’t have a personal income tax, and some that do have one offer tax breaks for pension payments, retirement plan distributions and Social Security payments. Also be aware that a state with no personal income tax may impose high property, sales or estate taxes.
Before making a move, contact us at (601) 914-9190 to review the potential income, property, sales and estate tax implications. We can help you minimize potential negative tax consequences and make the most of any tax advantages offered by the new state.

If you’d like to arrange for a transfer of wealth through multiple generations, consider a dynasty trust. Assets are taxed just once, when they’re initially transferred to the trust. There’s no estate or generation-skipping transfer tax due on any subsequent appreciation in value. A drawback is that the trust is irrevocable. This means it generally can never be revised. Call us at (601) 914-9190 for more details.

Some small business owners assume that offering their employees a retirement plan is cost prohibitive. But two plans are particularly suited to employers with fewer than 100 workers: SEP and SIMPLE IRAs. Only employers can make contributions to SEP IRAs — which provide high contribution limits — but you aren’t required to fund accounts when cash-flow constraints make it difficult. SIMPLE IRAs allow both employers and participants to make higher annual contributions than participants could with self-owned IRAs. Plus, your business’s contributions are tax-deductible. Call us at (601) 914-9190 to review your budget and benefit needs and suggest an appropriate plan.

If you have unfiled tax returns, getting back on track may be easier than you think. But the longer you wait, the more costly it becomes. The IRS charges a failure-to-file penalty of 5% per month (up to 25%) of the unpaid tax. There’s also a separate failure-to-pay penalty of 0.5% per month (up to 25%) of the unpaid tax. If both apply in the same month, the combined penalty is generally 5% per month. Returns over 60 days late are subject to a minimum penalty. Filing, even if you can’t pay in full, can reduce penalties and open the door to payment plans or other relief options. Call us at (601) 914-9190 for help.

Many taxpayers discover at filing time that their tax payments during the year didn’t align with their actual liability — either too much or too little was withheld from their paychecks. Keeping withholding aligned with expected tax liability can help you enjoy better cash flow during the year and avoid unwelcome surprises at filing time.
If you received a large refund or owed a lot of tax when you filed your 2025 return, it may be beneficial to fine-tune your withholding for 2026. Adjustments may also be a good idea if you experience a major life event, such as having a child.
We can help you review your withholding (and estimated tax payments, if applicable) and make any needed changes. Call us at (601) 914-9190 to get started.

Do you dream of retiring early? As in, really early? So do adherents of FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early). Many FIRE followers aim to retire in their 40s or even 30s! They make it happen by saving at least 50% of their current income, which some maximize by working second jobs. Obviously, this requires discipline and planning. But if early retirement is a priority, call us {Phone%} so we can help you make it happen.

Joint ventures and other strategic alliances can help your business expand its market reach, achieve operational synergies and improve profitability. A well-structured arrangement may also give your business the chance to “audition” for a future merger. Keys to a successful alliance are thoroughly vetting your partner, putting a strong agreement in place and focusing on financial objectives. Regularly evaluate the relationship and, if it becomes a drain on resources, revise or end it. However, if it’s mutually beneficial, consider a permanent merger. Call us at (601) 914-9190 to help ensure any alliance supports your long-term business goals.

Two federal tax breaks can help offset the cost of accessibility improvements. In 2026, qualifying small businesses (with $1 million or less in gross receipts or no more than 30 full-time employees in 2025) may claim the Disabled Access Credit. It’s generally worth 50% of eligible accessibility costs (up to a $5,000 maximum). Businesses of any size may also deduct up to $15,000 per year for qualified architectural and transportation barrier removal. You can claim both benefits in the same year, but not for the same expense. New construction isn’t eligible for either break. If you’re planning upgrades, call us at (601) 914-9190 to help you make the most of these incentives.

Large stock market gains in recent years, coupled with volatility in 2026, may have left you with a portfolio that’s out of balance with your desired asset allocation. If you haven’t rebalanced recently, it may be time. Careful planning can minimize the tax cost. Say your portfolio is overweighted in large-cap U.S. stocks. You can save 2026 taxes if you sell some of this appreciated stock from a retirement account because the gain won’t be taxed. If you need to sell the stock from a taxable account, see whether there are assets in the account you can sell at a loss. The recognized loss can offset some or all of your capital gains. Contact us at (601) 914-9190 to discuss other tax-smart strategies.

If you rent out your primary residence or vacation home for no more than 14 days, you don’t have to report the income. (But you can’t deduct related expenses, such as advertising and cleaning.) If you rent it out for more than 14 days, the income is taxable. And you may be able to deduct expenses such as utilities, repairs, insurance and depreciation. Exactly what you can deduct depends on personal vs. rental use. The rules are complex, but tax savings opportunities are available. Call us at (601) 914-9190 to learn more.

Intellectual property (IP) is foundational to the value of most businesses. To help ensure you actually own your company’s patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and other IP, work with an attorney to draft a standard invention assignment agreement. Employees and independent contractors should sign it when they’re hired and provide you with a list of excluded inventions (developed on their own or for previous employers). Legal advice is critical, but contact us as well. We can help you address IP ownership issues before you sell your business or before workers leave your employment. We can also help identify financial and tax considerations of IP. Call us at (601) 914-9190.
