Discover the breathing technique elite athletes use to perform under pressure. Andy Matthews reveals the 4-1-4-1 reset that transforms stress response.

"I knew how big of a competitive advantage it was that I didn't want others to know what I was doing." - Elite performance coach Andy Matthews

The secret isn't working harder—it's breathing better. Most leaders breathe 3x faster than optimal for peak performance.

Your missing competitive advantage might not be complex strategy. Sometimes it's mastering something you do 20,000 times daily without thinking.

🔥 Are you the only one who actually cares about excellence?
If you're exhausted from trying to convince people who will never understand why you take action before you have it all figured out... this one's for you. Here's the truth nobody talks about:
You're not impatient. You're not a perfectionist. You're not "too much."
You represent a completely different CATEGORY of leader.

While others are planning → You're testing While others are discussing → You're building
While others are researching → You're course-correcting
And that gap? It's not your problem to fix.

Thomas Paine knew this in 1776: "The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country."
You don't win with summer soldiers. You win with people who show up in winter.

This article breaks down:
✅ Why most people will never understand your approach (and that's okay)
✅ The 3-step system to spot other hardcore doers
✅ How to move from exhausting coordination to exponential collaboration
✅ The W-2 vs Schedule C leadership difference that changes everything

Stop burning out on the wrong people. Start building with your actual people.

Thomas Paine warned us about relying on "summer soldiers," yet in business, we do it all the time. Win with collaboration over coordination.

The more you build, the harder it is to see your own work clearly. That is not a discipline problem. It has a name — the curse of knowledge — and it is quietly costing builders customers every day.

In Episode 44 of Hardcore and At Ease, Shelly Rood brings in a customer experience expert to walk through her offer as a complete stranger. What that expert found in one hour changed three things at once — the keynote architecture, the content navigation, and the book outline.

The lesson she came back with applies to anyone who has ever poured themselves into something and wondered why the right people are not finding their way in.

This episode includes a three-question audit you can run on your own offer this week. No outside expert required.

You see work that technically meets requirements, but you know it could be so much better. Meanwhile, everyone else seems content with "good enough."

Here's what's actually happening: When we're under pressure, we automatically shift into survival mode. We start optimizing for speed instead of accuracy - and that creates MORE work later, not less.

The real solution? Understanding that when your pursuit of excellence serves something bigger than just your need to be right, people actually want to help you achieve it.

Benjamin Franklin learned this the hard way. He was brilliant and driven, but early in his career he was known for being argumentative. He had to discover that being right about many things didn't make him effective at leading people.

When you make this mindset shift, three things happen:
Your intensity becomes magnetic instead of exhausting
People start bringing you solutions instead of problems
Excellence becomes a shared mission instead of your personal burden

Stop carrying everyone else's standards on your shoulders. There's a better way.

What's been your experience? Do you feel like you're the only one pushing for higher standards?

Do you feel like you have to choose between high standards and team morale?
Retired Brigadier General Doug "Odie" Slocum commanded 5,000 people at the largest National Guard base in the country. His approach? "Violent positivity."
Here's what he discovered: Positivity isn't a personality trait you're born with. It's a cognitive choice you make multiple times every day.

"The smartest thing you can do as a leader is surround yourself with smart people, organize, train, equip, and motivate them and get out of their way."
His secret weapon? The Hawthorne Effect. When you tell people they're good, they think they're good, act like they're good, and get better.

There's a critical difference between being direct and being derogatory. You can maintain impossible standards without tearing people down.

Why leadership is really about taking care of people

What would change if you made positivity a conscious choice instead of waiting to feel positive naturally?

At every level of leadership, you'll hear reasons why something can't be done. The question is, will you let that stop you?

We had the privilege of connecting with Brigadier General Daniel J. Kramer II, U.S. Michigan National Guard, at the Selfridge Industry Series – Infrastructure Day in April 2026. His words had us reaching for a pen, knowing the weight of what's ahead.

"There's always a reason why 'you can't' at the highest level... push through anyway."

This wasn't just an inspiring morning. It was a front-row seat to a generational moment. The U.S. Air Force is investing approximately $1 billion into Selfridge Air National Guard Base to support incoming F-15EX Eagle II and KC-46 Pegasus aircraft missions. That means runway extensions, new construction, engineering, environmental services, and more, right here in Macomb County.

Our region has always answered the call. The Arsenal of Democracy isn't just history; it's happening now.

Most people leave out the hard parts of their story because they're afraid of how it will look. Hardcore and At Ease host Shelly Rood makes the case for the opposite. Craft isn't permission. Craft is care.

Owning a story completely still doesn't guarantee how someone else receives it, and that's exactly the point. The goal was never universal approval, or everyone's understanding, or even their kindness. The goal is telling the truth well enough to earn the chance to tell it again.
Watch the clip above, and catch the full conversation on Hardcore and At Ease wherever you listen.

You're surrounded by resources you can't see. Most ambitious leaders operate from scarcity when they should be leveraging abundance.

The tech manager waiting for budget approval while video editing software sits unused on company computers. The executive missing the expertise already on their team.

Christopher Lochhead says we're living in the best time for "pirates, dreamers, and innovators" to take action. But only if you can see what you already have.

The 30-minute resource audit in my latest post reveals why most leaders discover 3-5x more capabilities than they realized. It's not about getting more resources—it's about seeing the ones right in front of you.
