We want to begin this update by expressing our profound thanks to Jared Lamenzo, the musician, activist, consciousness-raiser, and chief advocate of the rebirth of the 1868 Erben organ at Old St Patrick’s Cathedral in downtown New York City. (For a rundown of Jared’s contributions, see the Sept 26, 2025 issue of New Yorker magazine.)
He is the person without whom this project may have never become a reality.
A 156 year old pipe organ that has never been altered, expanded, or “improved” is a rare piece.
Such was the state of the three manual Henry Erben organ, built just around the corner from the cathedral. The demographic disadvantages of the congregation left no money for unnecessary expenses. So, the old organ survived in a state of genteel decay, with sensitive but very limited work being carried out in the late sixties.
Leaping forwards through two years of arduous labor, the machinery of the organ conserved where possible, and duplicated authentically where necessary, it was brought to considerable perfection returning to a state of musicality that would please Henry himself.
The aesthetics of the instrument were also of great significance and import. A city contractor undertook the grain painting of the wonderful gothic case, advised by Brunner’s on-staff history consultant.
The uncovering of the pipe decorations by Hans Herr in fall 2025 led to a wholehearted programme of archaeology at the very least to document the details for posterity.
The findings, the colorfully-exuberant “diapering” (pipe decorations) were brought to the Father Daniel, Jared Lamenzo and the congregation at large, and the promise of regaining the original 1868 appearance of the facade was enthusiastically adopted and turned into an action plan to secure the funds.
The discovery process was carried out by Hans Herr, Chris Prestia, Tracy Desmond and Casey Pratt. Mr. Prestia sketched the designs and hand cut the stencils.
The colors were matched by Mr Pratt.
The painting was executed in house by Derling Ynfante, Tracy Desmond, assisted by Luke Winter, Hans Herr, Thomas Becker, Casey Pratt, Chris Prestia, Michael Clemens, Dr Robert Horton, Tyler Herr, and Tom Althouse.
We present the 1868 Erben façade, unveiled at the June 11 concert.
