Jay-Z Roots Picnic Freestyle — Alleged Targets & Bars

Drake
Jay seemingly responded to Drake’s “the jig is up” line from the recent Iceman era. Jay reportedly rapped: “The jig is up, I’m up 10, wrong chart champ…” and followed with the idea that people looked up to Hov, not the other way around. BET also reported another Drake-aimed bar about publishing and contracts: “Them crackers got your publishing checks…” and “in perpetuity is how your contract is worded.”

Nicki Minaj
Jay allegedly took aim at Nicki by referencing her husband Kenneth Petty. The reported bar was: “That lady back on that stuff…” and “Her Ken can’t even pick their kid…” EW says the diss focused on Nicki’s relationship with Petty and his past conviction.

Kanye West / Ye
Jay appeared to respond to Ye’s past public comments about Jay and Beyoncé’s children. BET reported Jay rapped: “My children is some of them, have you no shame?” He also reportedly said: “Everybody thinks they’re the ones insane. You’re no maniac.” EW interpreted other bars — “watch how sane he act in my presence” and “Y’all thugs with y’all thumbs again” — as aimed at Ye’s online behavior.

Dame Dash
Dame Dash was widely listed as one of the people Jay targeted, though the clearest available reporting I found names him as a target more than it cleanly breaks down a specific Dame bar. BET says the freestyle was aimed at former Roc-A-Fella partner Dame Dash; AllHipHop also reported fans online interpreted the freestyle as coming at “Dame, Drake, Nick,” and others.

Jaguar Wright
BET says Jaguar Wright was one of the targets, likely because of her years of public claims and criticism involving Jay-Z and Beyoncé. I would treat this one carefully on-air because the reporting names her as a target, but the cleanest bar breakdown is less specific.

Tory Lanez / Tory’s father
EW reported Jay also had harsh words for Tory Lanez, who is currently serving prison time after being found guilty of shooting Megan Thee Stallion, who is a Roc Nation artist. EW also says Tory’s father appeared to be referenced. I would not overdo this one unless you have the audio in front of you, but it is part of the reported interpretation.
