Additive manufacturing is expanding into more industries than ever thought possible, now finding its place in the oil and gas industry to produce more efficient, lightweight components in a less wasteful fashion than with typical manufacturing. 3D printing has created a way to make complex parts in a far more cost-efficient manner than previously achieved.

Many often view 3D printing as an expensive endeavor. However, these capabilities are used to save both time and money in your manufacturing process. For example, Volkswagen saved over $270,000 in 2017 by 3D printing the company’s tools instead of purchasing them outright. Rather than building each individual part of a model separately, piece by piece, an entire 3D model can be rendered and printed with ease and precision. This also allows for far more customization of a specific design than would otherwise be possible, creating unique opportunities for your business.

Using an extremely small laser spot size, Agile creates precision far exceeding the capabilities of most 3D metal printers. Another benefit of the laser metal fusion printer is cost savings. Traditionally, small metal parts are machined one by one, and production costs for pure metals like nickel and titanium can run high. Agile’s 3D printer enables very small, complex parts to be rendered quickly and cost-effectively.

New to 3D printing? Here is how our process works:

1. Your design is converted to a file that our machine can read.

2. The necessary components are broken into layers for the machine and the laser paths are created.

3. Your piece is built layer by layer under shielding glass with your desired material.

4. The first layer is melted while remaining bonded with the layer below.

5. The components are cut according to your design, with the machine adjusting the piece lower after each layer has been carefully generated.

6. This process is repeated until the entire design is constructed.

7. The parts are separated from the building platform.

8. Your design has been successfully completed in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

Ti-6AI-4V, also known as Ti64, has similar material properties to wrought titanium. Ti64’s high temperature and corrosion resistance make it a popular candidate for aerospace applications. This grade of titanium is also commonly used for medical implants.

Ti64 is used across many different fields, most notably medical, aerospace, natural gas, and power engineering. The high strength to weight ratio of titanium makes it a great candidate for many weight reduction applications.

Nickel is a malleable and ductile transition metal that is very corrosion resistant. It is best known for its heat and electrical conductivity and relatively high melting temperature of over 1400oC.

Though nickel is most common in its alloys, pure nickel fills a niche role in Aerospace, Electronics, and Marine environments. Nickel is often used for heat exchangers and electronic components.
Many other unique metals are also in development. Reach out to us to learn more.
