It’s official…summer is here! 😎 I remember being so excited that I would get to stay up in the summer since there was no school. That’s why summer is so magical…not all the rules are followed all the time! But, can kids stay on track with their sleep even during summer? Sure they can & here are some tips!

🖤 Keep it dark: With longer hours of daylight, make sure the room is pitch dark all the time.
🕶 Get outdoors & get active: This will increase melatonin production and help them expend energy & be ready for bed.
🍦Watch the diet: Increased refined carb intake causes poorer sleep for kids. Summer is a time for yummy treats, but make sure they have plenty of healthy snacks too!
😎Stick to the routine (as much as possible): With travel & fun activities it’s not going to be possible to stay completely on track. That’s ok! Instead, follow a couple of late nights with several days and nights of good sleep to catch up & recharge.
📚Start planning for school early on: Not to be a buzzkill …BUT, if bedtime becomes later during summer & it’s not adjusted before school, the first weeks can be brutal! So, just adjust bedtime by pushing it 15 min. earlier every 2 days until you reach the desired bedtime for back to school.

All naps are not created equal…IYKYK!

Naps can be SUPER frustrating for parents! Sometimes it might take longer for you to put your child down for their nap than the actual nap itself! 🙈🤯😡

To help with nap extensions, the best things you can do are:
-invest in good black out curtains
-watch awake windows carefully
-put your baby in the crib awake
-stay consistent

Nap transitions are always hard for everyone and can be super confusing to know when to drop a nap! 😡The 3 —> 2 nap transition usually happens between 5-7 months.

Main signs to look for:
-nap lengths decrease (usually later in the afternoon).
-you notice your child is able to stay awake for longer periods of time.
-it starts taking longer and longer for your baby to fall asleep for the naps.
-you may also notice that bedtime becomes more of a struggle and night wakings or early morning wake ups become more frequent. 🤯
-make sure these signs have been going on for longer than 2 weeks to ensure they aren’t due to any developmental milestones.

Is your baby feeding throughout the night and then sleeping more during the day? 😡This is the classic scenario for what is known as reverse cycling. During this phase, a child gets most of their calories at night (hence the incessant night feeds) and then sleeps with little feeds throughout the day. 🙈🤯

This can be EXHAUSTING for parents! 🥱So, how do you stop it?

You prioritize feeds and make sure your child gets more calories during the day. 😎This can mean scheduling feeds every couple of hours and waking your child up during the day to make sure they are getting enough stimulation so they are indeed tired at night. You can also wean down on feeds during the night so your baby will be more inclined to eat during the day.

Parents are pretty quick at trying to switch to a big kid bed. 🛌 I usually recommend clients hold off until their toddler is around 3, when their cognition is a little better at understanding they need to stay in the bed.

The exception being if there is a safety issue. If your little one attempts to climb🧗 or jump 😳out of the crib, even if they haven’t been able to yet, you want to make the move to a big kid bed ASAP. 💃We know kids never cease to amaze us but the last thing you want is to be amazed and guessing at how your child got out of their crib in the middle of the night, or even worse, finding them injured. ⚠️💔🤕
