NSI Solutions is a Pacific Northwest manufacturer of stone fabrication tools. They came to Terrene, Inc. for Rowmark® tags, each with its own unique serial number.

We laser cut and engraved the tags in one setup. The Rowmark® material also had adhesive pre-applied to the back, so NSI Solutions wouldn't need to apply it to each tag after cutting.

By combining material preparation with laser processing, we can help reduce the number of steps needed to get parts ready for use.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱? That's a useful question when looking for ways to reduce manufacturing costs.

These 8" circles are laser cut from 16-gauge perforated stainless steel.

Since the engineers determined that a continuous circular perimeter wasn't required for the application, perforated stock was an option. The existing holes meant the laser had substantially fewer pierces to make, reducing the cost of producing the parts.

Where the laser did cut, it produced the same type of precise cut edge you'd expect from laser cutting solid sheet metal. The difference is simply that some of the pre-existing perforations intersect the circular perimeter.

Sometimes changing the specification is enough to reduce the cost.

A small detail can make a difference in the finishing process.

These 1/2" acrylic dimensional letters were laser cut with double-sided adhesive tape preapplied to the back surface. Applying the tape before cutting keeps it precisely aligned with each letter and eliminates the need to tape individual letters by hand afterward.

That means fewer steps in your finishing process, with the adhesive already in place when the letters are ready for their next step.

Here’s a simple example of how multiple fabrication processes can come together in one part.

These brackets were made from 0.080" aluminum. We laser cut the profiles, countersunk the single hole, and formed the parts into their final shape.

The result is a finished component that started as a flat piece of sheet metal.

Sometimes a project calls for more than one process. Having the laser cutting, countersinking, and metal forming handled in one place makes the process simpler for you, with fewer steps between your drawing and finished parts.

This Labor Day Weekend, we’re taking some time to be with family and friends and enjoy the people who make all that work worthwhile.

I came across these stainless steel puzzle pieces while looking through some of our older project photos. I'm not sure what these particular pieces were ultimately used for, but they reminded me of something we've learned over the years: 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Artists are another important part of our business. Over the years, we've made laser-cut metal components for jewelry, sculptures, wall installations, and more.

Working with artists has given us the experience to support architects, furniture manufacturers, and set designers who use custom metalwork to add artistic elements to functional objects and spaces.

That's one of the things I appreciate about laser cutting. The process is precise and repeatable, but what our customers do with the finished pieces can be anything but ordinary.

Smaller laser systems can limit the size of the parts, panels, and materials they can handle. That limits what they can deliver.

This sign we laser engraved for Kulshan Brewing Company a few years ago is an example of what larger equipment makes possible. Engraved from 1" thick cedar, it measured 73" x 11.5".

At Terrene, Inc., the beds of our lasers can etch and engrave sheets up to 8' x 4', giving us the ability to handle large-format engraving and etching jobs that smaller laser systems just can't.

For steel rule dies, we laser cut the die board to precisely match the necessary part geometry. Depending on the requirements, that board may be birch or high-impact polymer. The die board is then fitted with steel rule to create the finished die used for die cutting.
