Old Sourpuss Artisan Vinegar

Our five acre vineyard of Merlot grapes is named after Raccoon Creek, which flows close by. Pam and Jed Horovitz manage the vineyard themselves . Pam is the former CEO of a large music trade association. Jed is retired from the day-to-day of Internet Video Archive, his company of aggregated entertainment information and video. We sell most of our harvest each year to local wineries, but we keep some back to make small batches of a delicious artisan vinegar.

Old Sourpuss vinegar is named after Jed, who is the master vinegar maker. We use the

French “methode d’Orléans” in which oak barrels are laid on their side and the wine is added to a ‘bacteria mother’ that acidifies the wine. Next the young vinegar is transferred to another oak barrel to age, leaving the mother behind for the next batch. We taste it regularly, and when it’s ready we filter it and bottle it. This is an all natural process that uses no chemicals, and has no additives so it’s all natural. Each bottle contains a tiny amount of the original mother, the bacteria that is so good for you that it has been used in drinks since the time of the Romans.

We also offer a white wine vinegar and a strawberry wine vinegar. Both are made from local wines using the same methode d’Orléans resulting in extraordinarily delicious vinegars that enhance your cooking.
