🚨 NEW YORK CITY HALL SINKHOLE: Snow Plow Crashes Through Sidewalk Above Historic Subway Station 🚨
A dramatic scene unfolded outside NYC City Hall this afternoon as a heavy-duty snow plow literally crashed through the pavement, becoming wedged in the ground. The accident occurred directly above the site of the legendary, decommissioned City Hall subway station, raising immediate concerns about structural integrity.
During active snow removal operations for Winter Storm Hernando, the rear of a municipal plow truck broke through the sidewalk, leaving it tilted at a sharp angle.
The collapse happened just outside the gates of City Hall, a high-traffic area currently blanketed in several inches of fresh snow.
The sidewalk in this area sits atop the old City Hall station, a 1904 architectural masterpiece known for its arched ceilings and skylights, which has been closed to the public for decades.
Crews are currently on-site with shovels and heavy towing equipment to carefully extricate the vehicle without causing further damage to the underground infrastructure.
NYPD and City Hall security have cordoned off the area, as engineers are expected to evaluate the extent of the sidewalk failure.
The ongoing blizzard conditions and freezing temperatures are making the recovery process significantly more difficult for workers.
This incident is just one of many "weather-related disasters" as Hernando continues to batter the Northeast with heavy snow and hurricane-force wind gusts.
While NYC is seeing significant accumulation, the "epicenter" of the storm remains further north in Plymouth, MA, where thundersnow and extreme power outages have been reported.
Mayor Eric Adams has reiterated that New Yorkers should stay off the streets to allow plows—at least the ones not stuck in sinkholes—to clear the primary routes.
