In addition to working on our property in Michigan so we can start building, we also help out our neighbor who raises beef cattle with daily chores when we can. Farming is not for the faint of heart, but the reward of such hard work has become something we've found incredibly fulfilling.
That cute little face below had contracted front tendons (buckled legs) when he was born and wouldn't nurse. The farmer wasn't expecting him to survive. But having just made a mid-life career change to become a veterinary assistant, I decided I would do whatever I could to help. A lot of nudging and walks around the barn along with momma in a chute so he could nurse easier for a while did the trick. Two months later and I'm happy to report "Barney" gets up by himself and walks like a champ. And he's even started stealing some of mom's hay. I feel like a proud grandma!
Our friend the farmer doesn't quite understand why us "city folk" are so interested in helping on the farm. I know he thought I was crazy the first time I met him and asked if I could pet the cows. He also didn't understand why I wanted a few corn stalks and was picking his weeds today. Most people can't figure out why we didn't just plow our old house over and crush it all into a dumpster. But that's ok. We've lived the life we were born into long enough. It was time for us to take the plunge and follow our hearts. It hasn't been easy commuting back and forth and the weather has definitely messed up our schedule. But we just keep putting one foot in front of the other and will hopefully be posting about our adventures and salvaging more often. Thanks for following us!
