Over decades, we have seen massage therapy evolve. Some things are fantastic! While others are disguised as benefits for the massage therapist - but aren’t.

Why do you think these things are harmful to the massage therapy community?

Our massage therapy practice act is undergoing edits again. There will soon be a 2nd Substitute. If you have been following along, and attending the Utah Massage & Acupuncture Board Meetings, you'll have an idea of what is happening.

If not, go take a peek! It's a lengthy read and requires a highlighter and a lot of referencing from one line to another and from one section of the statute to another.

We have reviewed it twice now and made recommendations to Rep. Thurston regarding technical errors. These are common in the drafting process and often require several edits to get it right.

There are other items we recommended changes to as well due to the impact/ undue burden that would fall on so many of us! Most of these edits involved the new requirement for a massage establishment registration.

We maintain the following recommendation because our favorite community of LMTs has been loud and clear over the years: An LMT should be the one providing hands-on training for those entering the massage therapy field! And, because the quality of massage apprentice supervisors increased greatly after we gained the ability to supervise up to 6 apprentices at one time.

Current Rule Change Proposal:

We just located this rule change draft that was uploaded in November of 2024

Were you aware of this?

Though we hope it's not too late to submit your concerns/ requests, it might be. This is why it is so important for us to check the dopl site on the regular!

We recommend that you read the proposed draft for yourself and make any change requests you believe are relevant and appropriate.

We also recommend that you send an email to request email notifications when something like this is posted. We believe that all licensees who are regulated by these rules should be notified when draft changes are ready for review and public feedback.

Opening up the practice act is serious business! It takes a lot of time to comb through every line, cross reference all the section references, and connect the many dots to understand WTF it all means!

There is a major change in apprenticeship supervision requirements in the proposed draft. As it is written, a massage apprentice supervisor or a massage assistant-in-training supervisor, who TEACHES 100% solo, will only be required to obtain 3,000 hours of licensed experience to provide training and education using an approved apprenticeship or MAit curriculum.

Amongst a long list of problems this new amendment would host, the bill proposes that apprentice supervision and massage assistants in training supervision should be reduced to 3 apprentices/ MAiT per massage therapy supervisor.

Want to ensure that we can maintain any combination of 6 apprentices/ MAiT under our wing as a massage therapy supervisor? It's time to speak up and make sure your representatives hear your voice and reason.

⭐️ Find your representative & senator here: https://le.utah.gov/GIS/findDistrict.jsp

Use the infographic below to put imagery to the words. Be sure to speak from your own experience, and how a reduction to 3 would be harmful to your income, or reduce your ability to provide 6 individuals with the opportunity to enter our profession with very few barriers to entry.

It would be even better if you reduced the cost per apprentice when you had 6 assigned versus the previously restricted 2 assigned.

Next up.... the proposed definition and exemptions of a massage therapy supervisor.

We are coming back to legislative session and suggested changes coming up. Please join us in using your voice to help ensure we can all have a part in lifting and updating our industry.
