“Imagine thinking that WATCHING someone else play a car racing game would give you the skills to be a getaway driver.”

That’s the energy Brett Barker brings in this new post about one of the most common myths in leadership training: the idea that watching a video = being ready for real feedback conversations.

Spoiler alert: it doesn’t.

Leadership isn’t a spectator sport. Neither is learning how to give psychologically safe, effective feedback. Scripts don’t stick when stakes are high—and high-stakes conversations always go off script.

In this post, Brett breaks down why practice (yes, actual practice) is the bridge between learning and doing. Not just theory, but safe, supported reps with real feedback scenarios.

If you’ve ever left a training thinking, “That made sense… until I had to actually do it,” this one’s for you.

🏁 Read the full post here: https://www.inclusiveagile.io/blog/learning-feedback-isnt-a-spectator-sport

Great teams don’t avoid hard conversations—they grow through them. This training helps teams listen, learn, and lead with courage.

“When the person who can choke you with The Force™ from across the room is watching, no one wants to look like a good target.”
That moment in a retrospective when the atmosphere shifts from casual honesty to careful performance? It’s not your imagination—and it’s not necessarily the team’s fault.

In his latest piece, Brett Barker slices through the illusion of psychological safety in many retrospectives and delivers a hard truth:

If the manager is in the room, it’s not really a retrospective. It's a status update with better branding.

This isn’t about villainizing leaders. It’s about understanding how power (even well-meaning power) distorts feedback.

As Brett puts it, when jobs are tied to survival, candor becomes a luxury most folks can’t afford.

- Want better retros?
- Want actual improvement?

Start by asking: Who in this room feels safe enough to be honest?

Tired of silence in retros? Build a feedback culture where candor feels safe and support is real.

Our Four Pillars: Building Agile Teams That Thrive

At Inclusive Agile, we believe agility isn’t just about speed or delivery—it’s about people. That’s why we ground all of our work in four core pillars:

Psychologically Safe Feedback, Systems Thinking, An Inclusive Mindset, and Agile Values.

These pillars aren’t tied to any one Agile framework. Instead, they offer a human-centered foundation that helps teams become more adaptive, connected, and resilient—especially in today’s complex, ever-changing environments.

Each pillar supports a different facet of team success:

-Psychologically Safe Feedback ensures that voices are heard, not hidden.

-Systems Thinking helps teams navigate complexity without losing sight of the whole.

-An Inclusive Mindset ensures that everyone—everyone—has a seat and a say.

-Agile Values remind us why we’re here: to collaborate, learn, and deliver value together.

Whether you’re brand new to Agile or rethinking how your team works, these four pillars can help you build something better—not just faster.

Agility isn’t just about process—it’s about people. Bring Inclusive Agile Agile's Training to your team and build a culture of inclusion, reflection, and brave collaboration.

Have you noticed how easy it is to feel powerless right now?

We have too.

But here's what gives us hope: putting our energy — and our dollars — toward real opportunities that uplift people who are too often overlooked.

This month, we launched Coaching for Change, a campaign to support trans and autistic young adults through personalized job coaching, hands-on training, and paid internships in tech.

Why?

Because inclusion can’t be performative. It has to be resourced.

Because real change doesn’t just talk.

It mentors.

It hires.

It pays.

We’re raising $5,000 by April 30 to fund coaching and internships that lead to confidence, community, and financial independence. And we're a 1/4 of the way there!

Whether you give $10 or $2,500. You're part of something powerful.

Let’s build the future we want to live in.

Trans people are under attack—and so are disabled people.
Across the U.S. and around the world, harmful rhetoric and legislation is targeting trans rights, disability access, and gender-affirming care.

These aren’t separate issues—they reflect a larger pattern of marginalization, exclusion, and even dehumanization.

We choose at this moment in history to be visible in our support and to focus our energy and resources to find a way to push back and actually make a difference for the people around us.

We want to do more than just speak up, though. Our ongoing campaign will enable us to coach and PAY trans and autistic interns.

It has never been more important to put your money where your heart is.
We invite you to show up with us!

You can repost, show up, and stay educated (and you should!).
But the real work, **job training, mentorship, mental health support** takes more than vibes. Build the world you say you want
Inclusion isn’t just an idea, it’s an investment.
Free actions matter: listening, amplifying, making space.
But let’s be real, systems run on money.
Companies can’t hire, train, or support without it.
If we don’t fund inclusive orgs, we risk losing them.

This is how we build the world we say we want: with values, voices, and yes, dollars.

Let’s show the world that we are more than the rhetoric..

Even $10 can support someone on the margins finding their way in. Visibility is a start, but opportunity is the goal.

This image reflects the heart of our campaign—visibly showing up as a community of support, and building real pathways to opportunity for trans and autistic people through funded, intentional action.

Did you know: Trans and nonbinary people are up to six times more likely to be autistic.

Just as many autistic people are trans, the reverse is also true. These identities often go hand-in-hand and yet, society continues to treat both as outliers.

(link to study showing this here: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9014767/ #:~:text=Warrier%20et%20al.,and%20sex%20assigned%20at%20birth).)

Our Coaching for Change campaign exists because our systems weren’t built to support and recognize the challenges and strengths that these populations experience.

We want to make a real difference with paid internships, coaching, and training trans autistic humans already in our community.

It has never been more important to put your money where your heart is.
