The hands-to-hands military training (pronounced sho-rin and/or sho-ren) of the Han Chinese troops of the Qing Dynasty army was probably basically something like this, regardless of the number of participants.
Tode-Sakugawa, who traveled to China in the early 1800s, officially(?) imported all 15 kata=forms (taolu套路 and lupai路牌) of this training (pronounced sho-rin and/or sho-ren) to Okinawa.
This became the basis for today's karate.
It was practiced by the military guards (pronounced anan-kou, anan-
kun, etc.; written in kanji as 把門官＝ba men guan) of the Ryukyu-kan in Fujian Province, China.
The Okinawans who traveled to China also received un-official training from these guards during their stay there.
However, the Qing Dynasty's hands-to-hands military training, established by the conquering Manchu people, was primarily based on grappling techniques such as wrestling and sumo, the specialties of a physically superior, horse-riding people.
The Ryukyu samurai did not simply accept the Tode-Sakugawa introduced.
This is because they had already mastered the striking-based military training of the Ming Dynasty, which was established by the Han people before the Qing Dynasty, and they had also mastered Japanese martial arts (mainly swordsmanship and jujutsu), which are the true nature of what is now called "Te."
The Ryukyu samurai transformed the unarmed military training of the 15 Han units of the Qing Dynasty army with the "Te" they themselves had mastered.
This could be considered the ultimate hybrid.
This was the beginning of Shuri-te and Okinawa-te, the precursors to modern karate.
